Hey! I'm considering to sign on as naval officer. Female; just graduated from local university.

1. Already 25. Is it consider old to start a military career?

2. I don’t know swimming. Any chance that I will learn during BMT? Heard that there will be swimming test for navy during OCS, does it mean out of course if cannot swim by then?

3. Any input on OCS? Heard that training will be tough, be it physically or mentally and easy to be out of course if didn't perform well..

4. How’s the career prospect, especially if I’m not high flyer or scholar?

5. Heard that skills are non-transferable = no experience. Does that mean it will be difficult to find other jobs in the future, especially if this is my first job after graduating?

Thanks!!

1) depends on which scheme if you are talking about eligibility. If you are talking about whether you are too old to start cause of other considerations, then depends on yourself.

2) Even if you learn, I don't think during the short time you can learn to swim like a fish kind.

3) What inputs do you need?

4) What about career prospect do you wish to know?

5) Depends on what role you take on?

One important question. Why are you considering to sign on?

2) Even if you learn, I don't think during the short time you can learn to swim like a fish kind. Ya, I think it is difficult to learn swimming in short time too. A concern will be kena ooc during OCS just because of swimming, it will be wasting time..

3) What inputs do you need?

4) What about career prospect do you wish to know? In term of career progression.

5) Depends on what role you take on? Can suggest me some roles? Still researching on specialisation..

One important question. Why are you considering to sign on? Working on board. My degree is quite limited too.

I think 25 for office scheme still kind. alternative is MDES. further details here. http://bfy.tw/FozQ

Why are you interested in signing on in Navy then?

career progression as in Recruit, officer cadet, 2lt, lta, cpt, maj, etc lor...

I find it strange that you would want to sign on when you don't even know much about signing on... SAF nowadays no such thing as iron ricebowl also... what's your degree?

1) Don't worry cause you still meet the age limit to sign on. You are only consider old when you are over the age limit that cannot even sign on.

2) Not sure about female BMT but for male BMT, you will learn swimming. Not sure about OCS for MIDS (OCT for Navy).

3) For naval officer, there are a lot of theory to learn like navigation, maritime law & etc. So MIDS will have less sleep cause they stay up late in the night to study & prepare for exams.

4) Mostly degree holders may retired at LTC or SLTC.

5a) In private sector, to be Ship Captain or even consider for Chief mate, you needs to have at least COC Class 1 [pass out from Combined Class 1 & 2 (Deck Officers) course] licence. Even the lowest ranking desk officer as 2nd/3rd mate (Depend on organization cause some do not have 3rd mate) also needs you to have COC Class 3 [pass out from Class 3 (Deck Officer) course] licence. RSN naval officer do not needs to have COC to sail the shi[ which is the reason why their experience cannot be converted cause they do not even have the most basic licence.

5b) You may have staff tour like becoming Manpower Officer, Logistics Officer & etc. But industry practice are different which is the reason why SAF experience mostly may not be able to convert to private sector. For example, HR in private sector deal with WICA but SAF do not even touch it. Logistics staffs in private sector deal with Custom for things like sea freight documents for export which SAF do not do it.

Will you find it odd if I tell you there are people who left SAF as a senior officer and join the private sector (private private, not government linked private). and maintain the same level of seniority and maybe even a step up without become a fresh grad again because of your so called "non transferable experience"

Well, Mindef did arrange with Senior Officer to remain in Mindef as DXO or a career transition to GLCs.

However what I am sharing with TS is if she quit the force, she will not have transferable experience unless maybe they are defense contractors.

Don’t think you get what I’m saying. Maybe you want to read again?
