Advice for upgrading rig

hi guys, seeing as 1000 series gpu are dipping in price, i was thinking of upgrading to a gtx 1080. (looking forward to playing games such as Witcher 3, FF:XV, Anthem etc)

My current specs are on the right >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

NEW Parts that i concluded with:

CPU+Mobo: i5 8400 + MSI B360 Gaming Arctic // (Do Advice)
GPU: 2nd Hand GTX1080 from carousell
Ram: 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 2666MHz DDR4
HDD + SSD: Reuse
PSU: Reuse (4.5 yrs alr) // (need to change? Do Advice)
Casing: Phanteks P350X / Fractal Meshify C / NZXT S340 Elite
Monitor: Looking for a 1920x1080 144Hz // (1440P text too small. Do Advice)

- i know i could consider mayb a 1070 or 1070ti but the price for these and the 1080 are pretty close so might as well hoot for 1080. (talking bout 2nd hand)

- since im getting a 1080, i tink my current cpu (i5-4460) will bottleneck my gpu quite abit, so upgrading as well.

- my casing the metal grills rusty alr, so can change too.

- monitor wise, after seeing a 144hz, feels quite shiok to me. so up as well.

Any advice is appreciated!

CPU and Mobo, can also go with 2600 and a B450 board like an AsRock B450 Pro.

Case wise, there are tonns. There’s the Tecware F3 and Edge for budget. There’s also Fractal Design cases like the Focus G (uncommon here) and Meshify C. NZXT has their H500. Phanteks have their P300, P400, Enthoo line.

Really, take your pick but I’m partial to the Meshify C.

are the fan ventilations good in those cases? i saw most of the cases nowadays have opted out on the optical drives and going with a full solid plate at the front.

unlike the ones where u can see the fans at the front which i tink has a better airflow? (im jus guessing)

While you're not wrong, you better make sure it has a dust filter as well.

Early Phanteks had bad airflow, newer ones are better.

The Coolermaster MasterCase H500P Mesh is a beast.

The Silverstone RL-06 is an airflow monster.

imo, you dont need 1080 to game on 1080p, even on a 144Hz monitor.
how much are you getting a 2nd hand 1080/ti for? cheapest rtx 2060 is $519 only.

2nd hand 1070ti cost ard $400+, i wouldnt mind spending abit more for the 1080

If your motherboard gg then that's another story as i5 4460 is about 5-6 years old which should be the same for your motherboard.

Just go for a cheaper 2600 or 2600x. Much better price/performance than the i5. Not to mention its overclockable.

For supported rams yes. Though ryzen, it is recommended to get at least 3000mhz.

I still stand by my opinion you don't need to change your parts left but ultimately, you make the decision.

Monitor wise, not really sure. Let other experts answer you on this

The AMD Ryzen CPU now not like last time already, IPC caught up to Intel.

Try to get 3000mhz and higher ram for Ryzen. Check the ram's model number in your mobo's webpage for their QVL (qualified vendor list). If it's there it will work at the full overclocked speed (eg. when you buy a 3200mhz ram, because default speed is 2133mhz and the 3200mhz is overclocked speed), if it's not there it may still work at the full overclocked speed but it depends on your luck.

since u are spending 500plus for USED card, why not buy a new RTX2070. Its ard 600plus when on sale.

Sometimes the unknown problems that comes with it ... not worth the time and afford to troubleshoot. New hardware just throw to distro to troubleshoot.

You might need to reactivate windows again, but you certainly don't have to reinstall it.

It can work but most will recommend you to reinstall cause drivers.

This is especially true if you go for amd.
