I have read from various websites about Fukuoka, would like to hear from the travelers here, what are the Must try, must visit/see, must eat, (or Must Buy?) in Fukuoka?

Any recommendation for one day side trip from Fukuoka?

Feel free to share your experience.

Thank you!!

First of all, if you are entering the city by train. The station name is Hakata.

For day trip, you can check out the nice Yanagawa. You should try the boat ride if you are in Yanagawa. It is a nice boat ride and am sure you will enjoy it. :)

For Fukuoka, it's a city itself. I only went to the the ohori park, the dome, the underground city. I would say not much things but can go for some nice food. Fukuoka is well-known as a gourmet city in Japan.

must eat is definitely the hakata tonkotsu ramen

some of the places u can visit in hakata:
yahoo! stadium
fukuoka tower
ohori park
tenjin underground shopping street
marinoa city premium outlet
canal city shopping center
yatai (push cart stalls)

yanagawa will be a nice side trip from hakata. it is know for their canal boat ride and unagi. another side trip location will be Dazaifu for their shrine and temples.
if u are going to yanagawa or dazaifu, there is a ni****etsu pass that covers the train to both places and the boat ride in yanagawa. even if u are just going yanagawa, the pass is worth it coz the train+boat is already more than the cost of the pass.

For side trip to Nagasaki, is Huis Ten Bosch worth visiting? Is it a theme park with rides or more visual stuffs, like those special effects?

If worth visiting, I am thinking of going to HTB, then in the evening, go up to Mt Inasa to see night view?

Do you think there will be enough time to do both for a day?

Nagasaki is definitely farther from Fukuoka. I personally enjoyed HTB and nice night view too. If you have the time to spare, you can make a trip there. I love the night view. They have a special discount for night entry after 5pm.

Mt inasa? Never been there so no comment :D

HTB is quite nice. it is mostly visual stuffs, no rides at all except for boat rides
http://english.huistenbosch.co.jp/

for side trip, do u mean staying in fukuoka and travelling there and back during the day? if so, i dun think u have enuf time. hakata to HTB or nagasaki is about 2hr, and it is about 1+hr between HTB and nagasaki. i would recommend staying in nagasaki and making a day trip to HTB.

Shinkansen whizz you to Kumamoto from Hakata on Shinkansen Tsubame or Sakura in less than an hour.

1.5 hrs train from Kumamoto to Aso.

It's advice to start off early.

day trip to kumamoto is possible with the new shinkansen. it used to take about 1.5hrs by limited express just to get from hakata to kumamoto.
but aso may be quite rush as u will need 2+ hrs from hakata to aso

There are 3 Shinkansen trains but only Tsubame or Sakura is valid on ordinary JR Pass, unless you tell me you buy Green Pass. :s22:

yup, gd to start early if you wanna go to Aso.

I remembered leaving my hotel @ 645 to catch the 710 train to Kumamoto->Aso. Spent a some hours there, ate lunch and left at about 3+ cos the last bus to the train station I alighted was at 3+. And it was getting too cold to stay there for long (IIRC temp was less than 2 degress C at Aso).

YAY. Fukuoka is one of my favourite cities, I visit there at least 2-3 times a year..

I personally would recommend having Yatai at night in Nakasu.

It's a really nice experience, well at least it was for me. A group of friends, slurping up that delicious tonkotsu ramen and aburi mentaiko < must try with a nice asahi beer by the river.
