Hi guys,

I was using a Radeon HD 7850 for my 2012 gaming rig which died on me few days back after 4 years.

Thus, i am looking for a new card to replace my 7850.

However, i am caught in between spending more money in upgrading to a better card or just save the money and look for something cheaper.

All I need is Dota 2 and CS:GO on max, which my 7850 have done very well.

I've been recommended the gtx 750 ti, R9 270/280, or gtx 950/960 on the higher end.

I tried looking for differences between 750 vs 7850 and i didnt think i found much difference, and i'm not really sure going for 950 or 960 is worth the upgrade.

Are there any other options i can consider or what would you guys reccomend? I need some advice and guide if anyone can help, i am not extremely tech savvy.

Thanks ahead people!

Firstly, congrats that ur 7850 lasted u 4 years. :) I sold off my HD7850 after 6 months of usage to get a GTX 670 :s13:

Secondly, do u foresee yourself still playing DOTA2 and CS:GO for the next 2-3 years? If yes, get the GTX950 (GTX 750 Ti gonna be phased out soon). If u intend to move on to newer and more demanding titles, a cheap GTX 960 would be the way to go. Unless u can find any R9 280x lying around in the second-hand market.

The games you play (now and in the future) are likely to be GPU limited so go for the best GPU within your budget.

The cards you mentioned are rather low-tier. I would think a GTX 970 should be the minimum upgrade.

The cards you mentioned.. won't provide leaps and bounds type of performance upgrade from your existing 7850. Some differences, yes, but significant performance upgrade, not really.

Also to future proof your gaming experience in the future, which is usually more GPU limited than anything, I'd recommend a GTX970.. cost around $460 cheapest onwards maybe.

Nothing lower than a GTX960, definitely.

Thanks hahaha, i was super sad though because i really loved my 7850. Yeah! I intend to continue playing both the games, I occasionally might play games such as Total War 2 (RTS) or MMORPGs.

Yeah that what i found out as well, like i believe 7850 was really good and most of the ones i mentioned and found out weren't significantly better at all. Which was my dilemma!

Ahh seems like everyone is recommending at least the 960 for me! I shall look more into it.

The issue at first was because i didnt know whether i should upgrade to higher tiers or not since the 7850 really was the **** during then and even now for my gaming leisures (till it died) so i was contemplating if i should just save some money and get something of the same range since it was able to provide full satisfaction for my gaming needs.

Comparing the 270/280x against the 960, which would be a better deal?

960 is the better choice apparently....

Mind you R9-270 is merely an underclocked HD7870, chip for chip.
R9-280X an overclocked HD 7970, chip for chip.

Alright sounds good!

If i bring in the context of money-worth value;

So if i decide not to splurge on something that i don't really need for Dota2 or CSGO, what would be the best for a budget worthy display card saving me the most $$$ to play those games at max?

Also;
I realised the memory speed/bus/bandwidth of the 960 is somewhat lower than the HD 7850?
Would that matter at all?

Overclocking gains are limited because of that...

Ts, I'm in the same boat as you. Only play less demanding games. Figured 950 is my best option since it's the price is really economical and performance is decent. But later decided to go for 960 since I felt i have $100 more to spare. This will cover me in case i wanna go for future games at 1080p low settings minimally.

Hahah! Totally!! But Dota 2 and CSGO aren't actually super demanding I'd think.

I was looking at Zotac GeF GTX 960 which is about $300, whereas Zotac's 950 is around $269

Which brand did you go for the 960?

imho, if you're gonna go for 960, the sapphire r9 380 4gb is more bang for buck
Not really...

1. 380 is just a rebranded 285 with additional vram. 4GB vram on 380 is redundant. 2GB is sufficient for his use with such low demand games. Not to mention, R9 380 with 4GB vram comes in around 400? Maybe at this price point can get a second hand GTX 970 already

2. Since games really not really intensive, even though 380 may have some performance benefits over GTX 960, not really useful for his case since 960 already supports the games he plays at > 60fps. If anything, he has to go lower, not any higher for gpu.

4gb 380 comes in at ard 350 where 2gb 960 comes in ard 320 according to the pricelist, of cos 960 will be sufficient for his games, at least the 380 is a little more future proof if he wants to play some new titles

Seems like prices for 4GB 380 have dropped.

If I were him I would actually try to find a cheap 280 (if still have) or get a 950 (since 950 performs close to 960) instead.

If you like that say 'future proof' for small gain in performance but 10% increase in price, like buay gam leh... And eventually 380, 960 and 950 will phase out.

Sapphire R7 360 2GB @ $169 before discount looks good too.
Cheap GPU for not high extensive games.

yea ik, but of cos, if it's only $30ish diff i would go for 380 personally, and yea 950 is sufficient for csgo/dota2

you can skip gtx 950, go for gtx 750 ti or gtx 960. gtx 750 ti no need extra power, best bang for buck, price for gtx 950 is too close to gtx 960 making gtx 960 a better choice. Unless you want to OC your card than go for gtx 950.

Personally I have gotten the 960 after considering through the 285, 380, 950 and 970. If your budget allows, I would say go for 970. If you manage to come across a good deal (around $200-$220) for 950, then go for it. If not I would say 960 is a pretty safe choice. 285 and 380 are more power hungry so I didn't consider them since my psu cannot support them.
