Hey guys, need some help/opinions. Was originally going to get a laptop. But I thought, for the same price ($1.7k), isit possible to get a m-atx or mini-atx gaming rig with a 24" monitor?
Would the rig be more powerful than the laptop? Any suggestions for build for that budget ($1.7k)?

Definitely better and more powerful than laptop. Laptop is on power adapter that isnt very high watts. So definitely the components in the laptop used are generally not as good as compared to desktop. And fyi 1.7k can land you a very decent com.

1.7k everything in with a 23inch

MSI B85M G43 + i5-4570 ~ $356
ADATA 8gb 1600mhz ~ $85
WD Blue 1tb ~ $78
Plextor M5S 128gb ~ $139
MSI r9 280x 3gb Twin Frozr ~ $440
Superflower HX600 600w 80+ Gold ~ $109
Sharkoon T28 ~ $87
Samsung ODD ~ $21
Dell S2340L 23inch IPS panel ~ $215
Windows 8 ~ $120
Logitech G100s Gaming Combo ~ $48 (mynextcom)

Total ~ $1698 Buy at tradepac DIY.

It's really simple. If you don't need a laptop or a portable computer, just go for a rig man.

As for your question on ATX/m-ATX issue, you can always get a PC within your budget whether it's ATX or mATX for your mobo.

A rig in the same price would definitely be much more powerful and enjoyable.

Haha then I think 600w better. Give him a bit of room to expand like more HDD or addtional soundcard in the future..

thanks. dont wanna get atx because the the smaller casings look cute and take up lesser space. first thought of getting laptop because I already have a pc at home (jb), and the laptop gives me mobility and a lower power consumption. But then i thought abt it, for the same budget i can get a better machine. So now have to consider my usage patterns
