CPU & Mobo: i5-4460 & MSI B85M-G43 @ $336
Ram: Crucial 1600mhz value ram 2x4GB @ $102
HDD: WD Green 1TB @ $69
GPU: MSI R9 280 or MSI GTX 760?
Case: Any cheap mid tower with good air flow?
PSU: FSP AURUM 600W @ $109

Guys I need advice on choosing case that can be used for future builds. And whether r9 280 or gtx 760.

I'm using it for gaming, and I'm not overclocking. Not going to use 2 gpu in the future too.

Budget around 1k, can exceed a bit.

Thanks in advance!

What type of games do you play and is it 1080p?

yup 1080p. Ultra high settings for Skyrim, Assassin Creed, the coming GTA 5 (hopefully can also), all these.

If you want to play Assassin Creed and GTA 5 at max settings, you are going to need at least a R9 280X or ideally a GTX 970 to play these games smoothly at max settings.

You should also get a WD 1TB Blue instead for a much faster and durable HDD.

Can consider the Bitfenix Neos or the Deepcool Tesseract at $65 for a cheap ATX case with good airflow.

Alright think I'll get GTX 970, it looks really good. Will check out the case you mentioned.

1. For ASRock H81M-HDS, what functionality will I lose out? Nothing much right?

2. For the PSU (500w), do you think I can reuse it for future build? Cos I dont mind paying extra for one that can be reused.

3. For case also, I dont mind paying more for smth that I can reuse for my future build. What do you think?

Thanks, Imma get GTX 970 and WD 1TB Blue (haha didnt know there's a diff between the colour).

The case you recommended can last for future builds right? Will definitely check them out.

1) You will not lose anything important when getting an Asrock H81M-HDS.

2) That may depend on what you want to install in your syatem in the future. However, 500W is generally good enough for most mainstream builds and you will only need a 600+W PSU if getting top-end GPUs/power hungry CPUs. The FSP Aurum also has sufficient build quality to last you quite a long time which allows you to reuse the PSU over a few builds.

3) Cases generally are quite durable and most cases would last you quite a few builds assuming you are only upgrading once every few years.

4) WD Blues are for mainstream usage while WD Greens are for energy efficient storage purposes, there are some significant differences across WD's HDD product line.

Thanks for your thoroughly detailed answer! I learnt a lot. I think I'll get the 600W for the headroom and it's just 20 dollars more.

Btw, what 22-24 inches monitor will you recommend?

Can go for the Dell S2340L.

Mind you, 500W is actually quite enough wattage for your system. 600W is actually a bit excessive unless you are very sure that you will be getting a top-end GPU in the future as it is hard to predict how power efficient GPUs will be in the future and maybe a 500W PSU may be all you will ever need due to improved power efficiency in CPUs/GPUs, leading to lesser need for a higher wattage PSU in the future.

You make a good point about the efficiency of CPUs/GPUs, I'll get the 500w one.

Another thing. What's the diff between palit gtx 970 jetstream and palit gtx 970? Which should I get?

This may sound silly...

Xigmatek Recon and BitFenix Neo allows room for graphic cards up to 330mm and 300mm. And the gtx 970 jetstream is 400mm long. So I would need a casing that has room for my gpu right?

How can it fit in?

Erm... the Palit GTX 970 Jetstream is only 247mm long, it will fit. Only GPUs with triple fans may exceed 300mm in length.

Oh I found the site that says 247mm.

Though the lazada site shows Size (L x W x H): 400mm x 272mm x 97mm. I think they wrote wrongly or smth.

If you have budget, highly recommend you get a SSD. Get Plextor m6s for 128gb, or Crucial mx100 for 256gb. Makes a lot of difference when booting up and starting applications.
