Advice on gaming laptop.

Hi there, I would like to seek some advice and kind words from whomever that can help me out.

I am currently looking at Aftershock's Vapor 17X. Here is what i configured:

Wife and i intend to use this for gaming, not triple A titles. Probably some old school games like Sims, Diablo 2, Counterstrike GO, League of Legends, etc.

I would like to ask if this setup is ok, or overkill?

Also, is it necessary to have a secondary SSD?

Totally overkill. You will be surprise that those games you mentioned are able to run off on modern iGPU.

Well of cause im not here to recommend iGPU setup. Minimally you will need a entry level or decent dGPU such as rtx3050. Those games arent taxing to the CPU as well. An modern i5 12th gen and AMD 6500H should suffice your entire needs.

If you are gonna spend this amount, you are better off with a gaming desktop which has far better value to it. Not unless you want to lugged around that monster 17 inch laptop which is by no means light to begin with.

I have no intentions to lug it out of the house, more like around the house, depending on which room is available.

I guess I did get slightly overboard as I wish for the laptop to last me at least 5-7 years, hopefully.

Paying more does not guarantee you it will last longer 5-7 years. It is a far stretch for a laptop. Technologies changes every year. Upgrading once in a while i would be a better choice and prolong your usage. Not forgetting Laptop runs extremely hot for gaming. You probably wont get the full performance and all due to the heat management. And as all electronics, electronics biggest enemy is still heat.

Apart from that, Aftershock is not something people here would recommend as most of them claimed that they run into issues. So YMMV.

As for your question regarding secondary ssd. It is mainly up to you. What are you gonna store beside games?

Save the money. Go get a gaming desktop then. A simple desktop with rtx3060 could still go on for many years to come and the upgrading path is open for you for many years to come also.

If you intend the specs to last you 5 to 7 years, I think it is possible depending on your expectation. But realistically, hardware nowadays are not as hardy as those in the past. So if it last 5 years, great. But you should always be prepared that it may fail before that. For Aftershock, I don't recommend decking out the specs, i.e. adding more components to the base. So things like secondary SSD, you should buy and install it yourself. Aftershock charges a lot for add ons. Normally for laptops, I will recommend to keep the amount of RAM and storage as low as possible and upgrade yourself (if you have the know how or wiling to try).

Heck, for those games, a GTX 1660 (Ti) would more than suffice, letting you run those games just about at max settings. I'd recently gotten a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro (AMD R7 5800H (8C/16T), 2x 8GB 3200MHz, RTX 3070, 2560x1600, 165Hz) over at Carousell at 2k SGD.

The laptop had about 23 months of Premium Care (which I'd made use of by getting a Lenovo technician to come over to take a look due to an overheating issue. He came and actually swapped out the entire cooling assembly, now that's excellent service! Apparently, previous owner had not bothered to clean the laptop for 13 months, although he'd claimed that he had it cleaned 6 months prior. I don't see any harm buying used from Carousell as long as the set still has a substantial length of warranty left.

I feel the Lenovo pricing to be all over the place. Even on their website, the pricing can be very inconsistent. For my case, I managed to scoop up a previous gen Legion 5 with Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3060, QHD 165hz screen and 3 years Ultimate onsite warranty for 1849 from Best Denki a few months back. if the Pro version with 3070 cost anything more than 2.2K, I don't think it is worth it.

Between the 5800H and 6800H, the latter is marginally faster. So I would recommend just going for whichever is cheaper as you are not really losing out much from a performance standpoint. If the 6800H is cheaper in this case, then it makes no sense to go with the older 5800H.

Previous gen legion 5 is not QHD 165hz, that was the pro. You can double check your specs. Legion 5 pro had QHD last gen.

There is a 2560 x 1440p option @ 165Hz for the Legion 5. The Pro uses a 16:10 display, so its 2560 x 1600. The brightness level for both are different as well, i.e 300 vs 500 nits (if I am not wrong).

The Aftershock Apex main selling point is it's portability, if not really moving around much kinda already overpaying

And since they never specify their 3060 is how many Watt, it can really diff a ton
