Hi Guys,

I'm having a dilemma on whether to crossfire my R9 290 or to upgrade to a higher grade GPU.

My objective is to have a smooth gameplay on 1080p but if possible I would like to have the same experience on 1440p as I have a 27" monitor.

So would having a crossfire be able to achieve smooth gameplay on 1440p (Hopefully Max settings)?

I understand that it's always advisable to go single card but right now I do not have a budget for a GTX980TI but I do have budget for a second hand R9 290.

Also I have a CM V850 PSU, is the voltage enough for crossfire?
Quick google tells me it's okay but just want to confirm again.

I would not be overclocking anything, only intel boost clock.

Many thanks. :D

If you can wait, wait for Polaris.

No point of getting another R9 290. No all games support xf.

Your rig will become more noisy and hot.

You will stress your current psu too.

To begin with, what kind of games are you playing or planning to play? To be honest, the R9 290 should be able to drive most games at 1440p since its just a little slower than the newer R9 390, with slight difference in clockspeed and less memory.

No point upgrading when you are tight on budget. You might as well wait for the next gen graphics to upgrade in the future.

whats your budget?
if sell your current R9 290 + initial budget (if it is $350) maybe can get GTX980, or just wait for the polaris. not all games support XF/SLI
the PSU is enough to support XF

Polaris / Pascal is expected to have at least 2x - 3x the performance given the jump from 28nm to 14/16nm process. The biggest performance leap in the last 4 years. Unless you are desperate to upgrade or very rich, otherwise hold on and wait for AMD and nVidia to show their cards first.

why not?
like that no ppl will be building system this year?

I think it will be difficult to get a new gen GPU since supply is always limited at the beginning. Plus, it will not be cheap at all. Best to hold on for sometime before jumping into the new GPU bandwagon unless you have a lot of money to spend. That is my opinion as to why this year is not a good year to buy a new GPU.

noted, like that also means the GTX 9xx/AMD 390 series price might go down, worth to buy if you are not into newest technology or dont need to be the best spec.
btw, the launch will be third/forth quarter, by the time it reach sg shore, still a long way to go.

TS already has one of the top end card.

There is very little selection for him.

Unlike those people who building new system.

So if I am building a new system soon, which GPU is recommended?

I second this. Wait for the next gen of GPUs then decide. Unless there is this lust to play some game now at max everything

I second this too. The next gen GPUs (Polaris architecture from AMD and Pascal from Nvidia) are coming out in mid-2016 onwards, and will confirm chop provide a leap in performance and power efficiency.

Tank awhile more for Polaris or Pascal bah. or you can wait till pascal is out

then when Pascal is out alot of 980ti will try to offload theirs to fund a new pascal card. Then buy off them.

If you don't mind secondhand market then go for a secondhand one, that said, the R9 290 should still do pretty well for most games. You can crossfire too.
