Advice on my current rig... =>

Hey guys...

As some of you know, I just overhauled my rig to this current specs. ==>

Very happy with it so far for the past 3 months or so.

However some of my PC savvy friends commented that if I were to game triple AAA title games at high refresh at 120hz/144hz I should have gotten an i7 8700k instead.

That got my instincts ignited. Does this mean that my i5 8600k at 5ghz is not sufficient for high refresh gaming?

I read some articles about high refresh gaming using i5 8600k and i7 8700k. OC the i5 8600k to 5ghz should be sufficient to maintain that high refresh rates right?

Of cos we all know that the gfx card is the main contributor to gaming, supported by fast RAMs. But if the game is well optimised for fast refresh rates, will my i5 8600k at 5ghz be a real bottleneck?

Would a faster RAM help? Currently using 3000mhz with CL15 RAMs.

Any thoughts of this?

I recently also buy the I5 8600K as well. I was thinking if I should get the I7 8700K. But it boils down to I am only using the pc for gaming and youtube and I do not do any streaming, editing photo or video. I cannot think of anything to justify that I7 which i can invest the money into a better graphic card.

This is going to be very game dependent. Some games barely use more than 2-4 threads while some e.g. battlefield 4 use plenty of threads, in my testing it used 9-10 threads on my 2700x as compared to my old i5 which only had 4 threads and was constantly being maxed out 100% all cores. This surely affected my min-max frames.

for higher fps, yes the 8700k in some games, do give higher fps than the 8600k, however you have already bought the 8600k, so definitely not worth it to upgrade especially when you have to sell the 8600k at a loss. the fps gains from a 8600k to 8700k is minimal i guess as not many games make use of the extra threads of hyper threading.

and definitely your 8600k is not a bottleneck.

you have a gtx 1070, if you really want more fps, go upgrade your graphic card lo, surely gain a hell alot more fps than a i5 to a i7.

Walao....that's why at that time when you start your thread on your new com I suggested i7 8700k. Anyway, since the damage is done, no point changing. Just stick with it. Unless your hand really itchy then by all means.

Your "PC savvy" friends are not PC savvy if they don't realize the bottleneck is now the 1070

I would keep the i5-8600K and put aside the funds for Volta.

Talking about it will just make your hand itchy, and then when you spend $$$ on marginal improvement, you'd regret and rather spend the money elsewhere instead

But now just save up for next gen gfx card or G-sync display.

Yah basically I didn't get the 8700k because I don't do much intensive multi tasking like streaming, video editing or even photo editing. Just pure gaming at max settings on triple AAA titles at 1440p at high refresh rates and movies and youtube/netflix. So I thought that the additional threads would be useless for my requirements.

But yah as you guys have advised it's better to just concentrate on a better gfx card now than mulling on whether the 8700k is a better upgrade.

Keep cpu , wait for next gen gpu, get the 1x80 ti ver, your fps will improve more than change cpu.

there are people in hwz that will douse you down if you buy an i7 to play games and want to scrim and save all the money. Its just $100 bucks.
