Advice on new gaming rig

Hi there, im thinking of building my own gaming rig rather then buying one as i'll better understand what's that is inside the rig so that when any problem arise i'll be able to do something about it.

I have a old desktop that has been left idling for months after it 'broke down' due to unknown issues.

Q: How do i know whether parts are still usable ? how do i test them out ? Would those old parts be usable in my new rig ?

Budget : 1 ~ 1.5k ?
Purpose: something durable, for gaming like dota 2, video streaming and school purposes in the future.

Anyone can provide me with assistance of what are the average specs of such gaming rig and recommendations on the parts ?


An online tutorial would be much of a help too !



PS: i know nuts about computer building, but im interested to learn ! please someone provide me information to do so !

I'm not sure if your current parts are listed in your profile as I'm using my phone to browse. For a start, you might wanna list all the parts you're using here since most of us are probably reading this with our phones. Also, do tell us how old your current PC is.

Next, when you say your old PC has broken down, what kind of issues were you encountering? We will be better able to provide some kind of diagnosis or advice for troubleshooting if we have a clearer picture.

Got to check also what are your old cpu stuffs. Must see what is worth savaging. Else a new rig 1.5k.


Also do let us know if you were to build a new one, do you need monitor, OS win7 or 8.1, speakers, keyboard and mouse, wifi?

how old is your desktop? you should prolly list out the specs for us to see..
It would be good to reuse so old parts can have a new lease of life in a newer rig

Hi guys thanks for the reply . Was checking on the old cpu parts . Apparently only some stuff like the HDD and CPU fans could be salvage . I don't think the others are working or might be too old to use haha. Ram was like 512mb per card ? Don't think the power supply is working since it failed to power up . Maybe can use the DVD drive ? Hahah

lols if i were you i would take MSI b85m-g43 + 4570 cheaper... and maybe a zotac 750TI instead of an Asus 750.

Haha they say I zham too much into the rig already since for dota2 only no need so good .

To hengheng; Actually I also don't know which parts are better in certain ways . For example getting a wd caviar HDD is definitely better than seagate HDD based on friends reviews etc and the price doesn't differ much . If anyone could possibly point out such parts that I'm getting that would be great enough .

To shadow84 : ssd like too much for me ah haha . I wouldn't mind throwing in one but I guess after I get that rig and got it tested out before throwing in one !

To hailgod: shall check out that site when I have the time . Someone suggested I bring that setup to pc theme and have them quote me cheaper, or even getting other cheaper parts at cheaper rate from them hah . Might consider that after checking the price list from them and compare first.

Wah very chim haha I noob in this field ! That's some nice setup I guess . Can you think of a even cheaper rig for LOL and d2 perhaps of 800 to 1k from pc theme ? Friend wanna get one too but low budget haha . No need ssd though

Take the 3rd build and remove the ssd ba.

Actually if u wanna build a budget gaming rig solely for dota 2 / LOL. I have been running some benchmark to test dota 2 and found out using a Pentium G 2120 + HD 5770 can run on full HD (1920x1080) without lag at all. Off AA and V-Sync.

Hmm nt really. I didn't test with Intel HD 4600 but tested with Intel HD 4400 though, cannot even play on 1920 x 1080 with decent FPS

Yup haha, I tested it already and deem IGPU still unable to make it yet.

For dota 2 gaming at (1920 x 1080), as long as ur graphics card is
AMD: HD 5770 and above
NVIDIA: GTS 450 and above

U can pretty much game without lag already even with older gen of Core2Duo E8400 and Core2Quad Q6600.
