Advice on number porting

Am on M1 and am thinking of switching to Singtel when I next change my phone.

I understand I have to keep my M1 line first until the number porting is successful then I can cut up my M1 SIM card and terminate the line.

But while I am waiting for porting to be activated, I still use my M1 SIM card right? So what happens if say I get a SMS to say porting successful when I am at work? I will not have my new Singtel SIM card with me as its at home.

Does that mean for the rest of the day my M1 SIM card is no longer active i.e. I am without a phone till I insert my Singtel SIM card?

the process very simple. porting to any telco is the same. the new telco (in your case, SIngTel) will give u their SIM card and notify u the date. once porting successfully, u jus need to change from old sim to new sim. do not terminate from current provider, SingTel will do it for u.

The process is also seamless. Once M1 is cancelled by singtel, the singtel sim card will straight away kicked into action.

You can continue to use ur m1 sim card after you applied with singtel to port in, you know the M1 sim card is inactive when your phone prompts you an"inactive sim" or some other network related message depending on your phone model. Once you know its inactive, you can switch to singtel sim already.

Likewise, you will receive the outstanding M1 bill too.

Thanks for the replies. So in other words its better for me to carry the new Singtel SIM card with me right? Because once the porting is successful my old M1 card is useless meaning I will be without a phone the rest of the day if I don't have my Singtel card with me.

Oh yes, its best if you bring it along.

Anyway, my last port in from starhub for my mum, the CSO at hello shop gave the sim card to us in an "unbroken" manner. Meaning the sim card is still attached to it's credit card sized skeleton for easy storage. I thought the CSO was pretty thoughtful in this manner.

Perhaps you can remind the staff if somehow that person forgot about this kind gesture.

All new sims, pre and post come in that form, in plastic wrapping, and you should receive it from them in that state too.

I've never been handed just the SIM card alone before.

Of course, but if you are buying it with the phone, most staff will break the sim card out of the skeleton for you, while some would bother to ask if they should do so for you..

I'm just saying some staff might forget that the sim is awaiting activation and might just break it and realise its too late after..

You can just fit it back into the card, it sticks in place quite well, then put the plastic wrapper back over it.
