I stay at Penang for 6 months. Penang Island public transport better than in KL. But suggest you take a taxi to Holiday Inn, because when the road is jamming, bus driver will ask you to go down and at the end you got to walk to your hotel. Bad service sometimes (depends on driver). Its hot in Penang, the place you stay near The Ship restaurant and sports activity such as parachuting.
If you go to town at Jalan Macalister, then you will see a lot of food stalls.
if you want best laksa of course the one near the KeK Lok Si. AND becareful, PACKED WITH CARS EVERYDAY and every hour. except 10pm and over. Even Penang peoples like to go Kek Lok Si every weekend to pay tribute to ancestors or etc.
So yeah...

Just wanna contribute my part of my 4 days in Penang.
Went there during Christmas,
Go by Tiger 3per @ SGD315 am flight
Back by Airasia 3 per@SGD258 evenning flight
Stay at Bayview Hotel Georgetown- 3nights @SGD240 (most Hotels fuly booked)
Near Penang Road..Daytime much activities n nightime bursting with makan n happenings at Pubs along Upper Penang Road. Another Hotel nearby is Cittel Hotel.
As what bros/sis here mentioned, all Taxis by agreed amount, most dun use meters. Anyway near these 2 hotels walking distance to all Heritage places n free shuttle bus along most of these area along a fixed route.
Gurney Drive not much better now like Spore Newton Circus n food so so.
For us, mostly walking to all places of interests.
Bukit Ferringhi n night market nothing much...nite market worst than Spore.
Like forumers said, the burger stall in front of SOHO is superb!! Every nite must tapau chicken & fish burger each! :s12: Beat Spore Ramly Burger anytime .
Kek Lok Si temple is awesome...at least 3 hrs to wander around. Took cab (RM$40) up to temple. Walking down like going thro a tunnel of Pasar Malam.
Foodwise, good n cheap. Curry fishead just RM$14 n nasi kandar at Line Clear very good. Queue even at midnite!
Red Garden is another food venue not as much stalls as Gurney but food better.
Hope this short notes helps...

Frankly, there is no metered taxi in Penang (as in no one uses it, even if all taxis has meters installed) - for so many times (and years) that I have been to Penang, all travel on taxi are by agreed amount.

Standard at the assam laksa store near Kek Lok Si temple has dropped a lot, but the curry mee in the market there is still good.

Up to individual preference..

I actually utilized the Rapid Penang bus service throughout my stay in Penang without taking taxi.

The free CAT bus shuttle in Georgetown is a good way to move around the town without a cent to various places of interest (although packed buses and slower freq during peak hours are unavoidable).

I took service 204 from KOMTAR to Kek Lo Si and sightseeing along the way.

I bought the "Passport" (like last time our school bus pass) as well to save the hassle to fork out coins and notes for my trips.

actually the entire malaysia taxi dun really go by meter. JB, KL also like that lol:) But kl sometimes they will go by meter, but they will bring u go round round lol... Been to bukit bintang last week, told the taxi to go to mid valley from BB, then he drived to the sunway hotel there and then go to the highway and drive down. He is making a big round :) Then turn out to be around 15 RM.

Because Kl sentral to Mid valley by KTM sometimes have to wait for around 20-40 min. Worst part is the train will get delayed or you might not be able to get inside the train as it is too cramp LOL.... EXPErienced before many times lol....

Going penang for the first time in May.. Attending an event held at the esplanade/padang area..

Manage to book jetstar promo for $68 with tax..

Now looking for hotel in georgetown.. Anyone stayed in hotel sentral georgetown or G inn before? Which is a better choice? Both is $54 on agoda.. Plan to visit the heritage area and the toy museum..

Thanks!
