personally, i don't like staying near komtar. busy, crowded. but hotel sentral georgetown is near alot of good food. there got this chicken rice restaurant. tokkong until the skin damn crispy. like 5 star restaurant standard:s13: but that road there is very hard jaywalk. so exercise caution. the last time i went i stayed cititel, about 10-15 min walk from komtar, but that 15 min walk can see quite alot of stuff. about 5 min walk to a dimsum stall and 10 min to wet market. can see and experience the local life there. according to my mum, its similar to the old singapore. :s12: but more modern abit. :)

i oso stayed cititel before and i really liked it. staff very friendly and OMG their breakfast is damn satki! got teriyaki beef one lol

the other time i stayed at penaga hotel at georgetown area (work trip). expensive, very cool hotel with lovely decor and vintage furnishings. breakfast was so-so but right opp it there's a mamak store with shiok mee goreng.

think the next time round i wanna try one of the hotels along gurney area.

I once ate at gurney drive tio food poisoning too..somemore the food there not very nice and expensive than elsewhere lor....the hawkers also demand that you order their food when you sit in front of their stall.

In recent times, in Malacca and Penang, the population of hawkers increased substantially to cater to the massive influx of tourists who want to savour the local food. Many of these new hawkers are merely taking advantage of the reputation of the location and have no quality to show. Penang, and in particular, Gurney Drive has a collection of such hawkers. On top of this, many of the original hawkers have moved on, or have delegated the cooking to their Burmese employees. I ask my local friends and relatives when I seek good food, and I am told good stuff can be found in the residential neighbourhoods.
