just got back from a 3d2n group trip to penang.
stayed at Cititel Penang - decent rooms, free wifi (not very fast), nice view of E&O hotel and the sea, a (touristy) coffeeshop round the corner selling decent ngoh hiang amongst other food.
personally think will be better to stay along lebuh chulia (chulia street). we spent alot of time walking along this road as it connects to carnarvon, (via cintra) campbell and kimberley (street food, dim sum, cafes, etc) . there are many boutique and heritage hotels along chulia.
gurney is touristy (for a reason) - you get all the street food in one location and there are malls (by capitaland catering to sgreans) next to it. be prepared to get stuck in the jam in the area and the taxi touts.
Gnee Hiang is good and
cheap! Multiple outlets.
Does anyone know how to go about booking a mini van with tour driver (9-10ppl) for 4 days? Any recommendations or websites?
We got a
really good taxi driver! (
Penang Taxi) in fact we got the boss Mr Lee - a well-traveled and semi-retired (successful) engineer. booked him for 1.5 days and all of us were VERY satisfied.
P.S. Fort Cornwallis is a
waste-of-time, VERY poorly maintained and waste of money even at RM2/pax
