I intend to drive up from SG to Penang. Intend to make 1 stop, any recommendations? Was intending stop at Ipoh but seems nothing much to do there. Any other recommendations? Intend to stop around 2-3 hours, for car to rest and refuel and for human (me) to rest and refuel. Maybe some shopping mall etc. KL seems too near for me to make a stop.. that's why Ipoh was chosen instead. TIA !

intend to rent a car and drive around penang for during our 4 days there. would like to ask if we can just rent a car available at airport and return on the day of departure or need to book in advance via website? thks!

You may consider making reservation with holidaysauto.
It's like Agoda but for car rental.
They have really good offers.
And you may wanna consider getting internet connection as well as local number for your convenience.
Let me know if you need those. I can provide them without having you to change your sim card. :)
Whatsapp me;)

Ipoh is good.
There are lotsa food you may try.
The beansprout chicken is ok but I would recommend the salty chicken just one street further from the beansprout chicken. The shop uses a red color box to pack the chicken. Try it while it's hot and you will not be able to resist it.:D

There's also a soy bean shop name funny mountain nearby. They have really smooth taofa. Also, google for the famous caramel pudding in Ipoh. It is also nearby the city centre with all those food.

If you need a internet connection and local number, you may email connectz.raven@ gmail.com or whatsapp me.
There is no need to change sim card at all and you may use it along the highway.

Enjoy your trip!:)

Some folks would take their break and stop at KL as their bodies couldn't take it.

But if you can take the driving till Ipoh, then good for you.

There are some nice food in Ipoh.

You can try Homie Delights Guesthouse. Newly opened, clean and located 5 minutes walk from Penang Times Square mall, 24 hours McDonald's, Penang Famous Buffet Steamboat, Penang Famous White Curry Noodles and lots of coffee shops around there!

They provide free two way airport transfer too!Wow!

There is also a cafe beside that opens till 12am. Also, Penang Famous Fried Kuey Teow at Siam Road is just 7 minutes walk from the Guesthouse. Plus, New Lane Street food,a street with more than 50 food stalls is just 5 minutes walk from the Guesthouse, 7 minutes walk to heritage area and Komtar.

Well, Ipoh is approx. 6-7 hous from Singapore.Depending on how fast you drive. If you can tahan, then stop in Ipoh. There are few places to eat like the Ipoh bean sprout steam chicken rice, ipoh soya bean and tau fu fah. But don't go in KL or stop there to eat. Not recommended as it is usually jam and hard to find parking too.If you are not familiar with the road in KL you might get lost too and end up paying alot more on toll. Sometimes GPS can be confusing as the roads there keep changing too.

newlane food hawker area (like what ccssgm said) is just beside the hotel. have the standard hawker food of penang (char kuay teow, curry mee, lor mee, prawn mee, char kuay, etc.) lazy list down, but the desert stall is good.

sister's char kuay teow (185 jalan macalister) is good but quite small portion and expensive (maybe due to the crab meat lol)

tai tong restaurant along lebuh cintra for morning (cheap and shiok) dim sum.

coffee shop at the end of jalan rangoon facing jalan burma (cant rmb the name) has very nice claypot rice and char kuay teow.

nasi kendar pelita (146a jalan macalister) has very good prata!

huo guo zhi jia (steamboat dinner) cheap and good! has a lot of things to eat! they have dim sum breakfast too but i didnt try.

just a few recommendations. but still taste can be subjective so dont bash me if not nice!

Tai Tong dim sum is so so and expensive! You should try the one at Anson Road. Much cheaper!! 5 person eat till full only RM 60-65 total!

Stay in Georgetown better as there are more places that you can explore good, delicious and affordable local traditional cuisine and also more attractions that you can visit.Places of heritage and cultures are mostly located in Georgetown compared to Batu Ferringhi where there is only beach, some shops, some massage parlour and night market and eating there is rather expensive, not so local and not tasty.

Batu Feringghi is also far from town and very quiet and boring in the morning till evening. The place only got lively at night while Georgetown is lively from morning till night. Tone down a little at night but still have many shops, coffee shops and bars/pubs that open till late late night.

U are welcome. haha! The most famous area or hot spot to visit is Georgetown. Here u can find lots of nice delicious food and also those famous 'Street Arts' wall painting. Have you ever heard of that? If you like to take photos and selfie, there are few areas along the Georgetown Heritage City which you can find those Street Arts and also heritage pre-war buildings with some more than a centruy culture still being preserved in Penang.

Among those places that you can visit are Armenian Street. This places is a MUST visit. Along this street you can find few temples, most notably the Khoo Kongsi.Entrance is free if your surname is Khoo. hehe!

In addition, you can also go to 3D Interctive Museum, Trick Eye Museum,Penang Peranakan Museum, Kuan Yim Temple, Clan Jetties, Camera Museum, Teowchew Temple,St. George's Church, Cathedral of Assumption. If you are in Penang on Sunday, you can go to Beach Street for the Occupy Beach Street where there are lots of activities and performances to watch plus enjoy. It only happens in the morning from 10am-12pm every Sunday only. All these famous 'hotspots' mentioned above can be accessible via cycling, walking or the Free CAT bus if you don't drive.

Places like the Escape extreme sport, Toy Museum, Penang Butterfly Farm (SEA Largest Farm), Batu Ferringhi Beach, Tropical Fruit Farm, Tropical Spice Garden, Penang National Park, Teluk Bahang Dam are situated in Batu Ferringhi and Teuk Bahang, which is located at the top north of Penang, far away from town. So to go to all these places faster and hassle free, you will need a transport, either to take a bus,Rapid Penang bus 101 which took about 45 min-1 hour one way to get there. Another option is to rent a car and drive on your own or hire a driver which is so much faster and saves time.

Kek Lok Si and Penang hill at Air Itam which is 20 minutes from town by car,is also accessible by bus.If you take the bus,it will take 30-45 minutes depending on the traffic. On another side of Penang is the Balik Pulau and Bayan Lepas. You can explore Snake Temple and War Museum there and eat the famous Laksa Penang at Balik Pulau. :)

It is better to go around those places hiring a driver as it is faster, more connvenient and save time to search for places and you get to visit more places too!

agreed. Try not to follow E1/E2 that cuts through KL... will jam along the way in KL. I saw a huge jam mounting up on the opp side entering KL.. crazy jam..

What i did was to go around KL... Elite E6 > E35 >Back to E2...

Quite easy and very smooth...

If I remembered correctly, there are times where there are offers or promotions for G Hotel.

My family and I were fortunate once to have riden onto one of those promotions but that was some years ago and I can't clearly remember the rates then.
