You can't overclock a 6500. Even if you do, it's still not safe. Plus there's always a risk in oc.

For ts, just get a b150/h170 for your usage. It's the same as Z170 without the oc function. That's the shortest and sweetest answer I can give you. Don't read too much into international forums. Keep in mind, Z SERIES MOBO IS FOR OVERCLOCKING CPU AND RAM.

Totally different from GPU. I can overclock my gpu even on h110 boards as gpu is a separate component and uses only the PCIE x16 slot for graphical processes interaction with the mobo. Hence, most gtx cards can oc at any mobo as long as you have enough power to do it.

First of all I would just like to say thanks to all of you who are willing to provide me with valuable advice :D

No no no no no!
Have u actually read what u need? U don't overclock don't get things that u don't need!

Let me tell u something. many people want z to future proof yet they will never use the features in the end. All the previous advice by others indicate that u can work with a h110m and not a single problem.

And advice from overseas DO NOT APPLY to sg when it comes to pricing. That guy may be right when it comes to selecting z mobos in their country but in sg, it's definitely priced higher than the rest so don't even think about it.

I agree that the Z170 motherboards are priced higher. However, once again the Z170 motherboard is not solely for overclocking. As Encrypted11 states, overclocking brings negligible performance gain which I do not think is necessary. I know that I definitely will not overclock. However, if the point about "better audio" and all the other small gains is true, those I feel are important to me and will be useful to me. The additional ports are something that I may or may not use, but that again is less important to me. The important part...I will mention below ^^

Another reason that I did not state is, similar to how I avoid buying newly released products, I try to avoid buying "budget" products/parts as they may seem to save you money at first but the real cost comes in the form of repairs (plus inconvenience) and unreliable customer service down the road. For example, my Asrock B75M-DGS motherboard may be considered one of the more "cost-effective" options when I purchased it, but look at the trouble it cost me, at least $100 in just diagnostic costs (where the shop said they couldn't find any problems each time, as I mentioned that the problem only occurs periodically, so that $100 is kind of wasted) and the effort and time it took to bring the PC to SLS. Kind of like how you buy a budget Android phone but experience slowdowns over the years and all the "hidden costs" like headphone jacks, mics etc spoiling and such, versus buying a "premium" or more of a flagship phone like the iPhone and have less hassle in the long run. Anyone who has experienced both sides will understand my worries.

This is why I usually prefer to save up for a better product, even if it takes a longer time.

I didn't just blindly choose the Z170 simply because it looks good on the spec sheet. I try to consider all the other, smaller things that are often overlooked during purchase, as I learnt it myself the hard way. :/

However, if you yourself own a H170 (or lower) motherboard and can vouch for its reliability and stability in the long run (preferably at least 5 years), then I will surely get one without hesitation, because even though I greatly appreciate all opinions, it would be even better if the person recommending has owned and had first-hand experience with the product.

I guess I'm not really looking for features but rather reliability and stability.

For example, Encrypted11, do you utilise all the features like multiple graphics cards, 16 GB of RAM in your daily usage, and almost all of the USB ports (maybe around 7/10 of the ports) provided by your Z170 motherboard? If not, may I ask the reason for choosing a Z170 as opposed to say a H170?

If I had spent that extra $100 when I was purchasing my first motherboard (the Asrock one) and went for a higher-specced, more trusted and reliable motherboard that others have had experience using, I may not have needed to waste extra $100 for nothing but diagnostic tests which did not benefit me or my PC in any way.

Anyhow, thank you for your advice and desire to help me save money :D

well based on what they say are right, but u also need to get the right component to perform such task as well.

den again, if gaming, depends on what games u playing, most of them are gpu dependent, while a few title are cpu dependent. so even with all these faster system, but your gpu is the bottleneck, also no point in it.

lastly do u really intend to OC? bear in mind, OC can go south for your system, if not doing it correctly. ;)

Ok sorry perhaps it was my fault. I mentioned that I am 100% satisfied with my current graphics card, but I guess I forgot to say that what I value now is faster multitasking speed and speed of overall system tasks like installing/uninstalling stuff, web browsing, movie playing etc. These are the things of higher priority now.
Gaming is more or less settled with my current system.

I should have put my thread title as "rig" instead of "gaming rig". Will go edit it now ^_^"

EDIT: Oops, I realised I can't edit the thread title, or maybe I don't know how eheh. Well I hope that people will come across this post then XD

Sigh. u are stubborn. I give up. The gains are not even there. People have actually tested a h110m vs a z mobo and they found not much difference whatsoever. The reason why we are all telling u not to grab that z mobo is because the price premium does not justify its features which u will not be using.

Once again, not many get z mobos. Z mobos do not mean reliability. Your argument is once again flawed.

Mobo is an ITX board, 4-6 SATA ports total. I use only 2 but have another 2 planned and routed into my cable management already and will be just drop in upgrades with space already catered.
It barely implements what the chipset is capable of.
The reason why I have this board is none other than followup effect to poor budgeting, styling ended up not going with my preference. And that its colours are not exactly clashing with the rest of the system's colour scheme (since there aren't white skylake ITX boards). But I'm satisfied with the current setup.
When its mostly a #1 styling, #2 performance build.
(already own a K processor + another z board, so change to another unlocked board and ASUS is not overpriced on Amazon)

But that said, from previous build port to current, I haven't really lost money from resale except for time wasted redoing the build, cable management etc.

Well if someone were to take over my hardware at RRP, I'd gladly accept a build like a B150M Mortar Arctic + i7-6700 + imaginary fractal define mini c in white colour. :s13:
Lastly on the thing about the sound card, you'll be better off getting a dedicated one to be used on a PCIe slot than relying on derivatives of realtek onboard audio codecs. I'm not well informed in this area in pricing terms, but if local sound cards are overpriced, you can always look at amazon options that are a click away.

If OP wants a Z170, then that's his prerogative.

Personally, I won't consider anything except a Z board, even though I don't OC.

Hmmm alright seems like from the replies the Z170 is generally a bad idea and waste of money.

So can anyone recommend a motherboard (that you have used before preferably) that will be able to last for approximately 5 years and hopefully have zero repairs? Also since it is supposed to last for around 5 years hopefully the person recommending can take into consideration things like USB 3.1 (Type-C) becoming the norm. It will be used with an i5-6500. What I'm looking for are reliability and performance at the best price. And of course, compatible with the current rig in the OP.

Also, what are the best stores to buy PC components from in terms of customer service and price? It would be good if the store can help to assemble.

Thanks again :)

EDIT: If this is of any importance, I will probably upgrade my SSD to an M.2 SSD in the near future.

Let me tell u one thing. Nobody can guarantee reliability. Some people can go like yea this brand good, that model better based on their experience but that's a sample size of one.

Your best solution is to list out your expectations (usb-c, m.2 slot, extra pcie slot), seek out a mobo that provides said features and look at their reviews.

Your experience with asrock lead to u thinking that a premium price mobo might be more reliable but that doesn't mean that lower end models are less reliable.

I had this dilemma when choosing mobo too but end up with gigabyte because of the reputation. Also, the tech guy at cdltrading (forgot his name) is very helpful. He also taught me some basic knowledge which is nice. I am not promoting gigabyte, just sharing my experience.

Don't think about future proofing; ask yourself what features u want.

can voucher for gigabyte mobo as well, cos i still can use pc for so many years, installed a windows 10 as well, some more mobo is on C2D era and still can play games at decent framerates (ofc not your triple A game. more like those can support lower end game.)

For newbies, go to PC theme. Assembly fee cost around $30-$50?

Okay thanks! My current rig is actually built by PC Themes. And from my previous experience, the customer service is very good, but the quality of construction does not seem to match the customer service. In fact, I have not mentioned it but one of my case fans have spoilt (the top/bottom facing one) because the builder of my PC left one of the PSU-to-motherboard wires hanging in the way of the fan, so the fan probably veeery lightly slided against the hanging wire and in the long term that fan broke down.

Any alternative stores that can match the customer service of PC Themes?

If you wan very nice cable management, ownself do it. Their job is to help assemble, make sure it works and thats it. Fair enough that mistakes can occur, but if they do each rig very nicely, loads of manhours will be wasted.

U can always bring home and redo the cable management urself.

Good cable management takes time to do. Once the PC can power on its considered task complete for shops. You can always open up, re-evaluate how you want to do the cable routing.

Oh I see! I didn't know that as I was (and actually still am) a newbie at this. Thanks for the info!
Fun fact: I have never ever opened a PC on my own before, until this year.

So in short, no other stores can match the customer service of PC Themes?

as for customer service, i personally dun care as long as they dun try to fleece me or replace my parts. if u wanna know why, after one week all replacements and warranties will be covered by the distro instead of the shop. therefore, customer service in sls is overrated.

for lazy people who prefer to pay for the building service, i think pcthemes is ok as they won't try to fleece u and they have a fairly good reputation. but their prices are slightly higher la.

but if u want to save some extra money, go to tradepac. but go to tradepac only if u know what u want. they are very very likely to try and hardsell u other stuff by saying the thing that u wanted is out of stock. this is based on the accounts of some shoppers there. whatever replacement they suggest, u reject. tbh, even sls people dunno the hardware very well.
