Advice on upgrading

I think its time for me to upgrade since my computer has been getting cranky recently. But I don't know which part to start to upgrade from hence I am here for advice.

I use the pc for video editing using premiere pro, maya for 3d, after effects for composting and motion graphics.

Below is my computer specs.

ProcessorIntel I7-870
MainboardAsus P7P55D-E Pro
Graphics Card Radeon Powercolor 6850 premium
Memory 2 x Kingston DDR3 4GBStorage Drive Samsung 1TB SATA2 + Western Digital 2TB Green Caviar
Display 2 x Dell U2311
Supply Unit Cooler Master 550W Extreme
Casing Cooler Master 690 Advance II
Operating SystemWindows 8

I am thinking of changing my graphic card and adding another 8gb of ram. Do you guys think its a good move and which will you recommend?

Thanks EatSnakeWarrior for your advice. Will probably take your advice and get the radeon r9 280x. Do I have to upgrade my supply unit too or add in more fans as I read that it tends to get hot?

should be enough, graphics cards are built to work at those temps so dont worry about it.

the gigabyte one should cost 425 / msi one 44X (not sure about this)

Add in an SSD to your build. Will help you increase the overall responsiveness of the OS.

Next is get the extra 8gb of ram

ADATA 1600mhz 8gb ~ $85
Plextor M5S 128gb ~ $139

Then add on a GPU see do you game or not. Looking at your current card 6850 i dont think you game much.

If you aint gaming get a GTX660 will do.

Yup, I don't game much but I need the gpu for video editing, after effects and 3d. Anyway for the ram, I can mix different brand together?? Or I have to sell my current one away?

As long as it is the same frequency it is still ok.

If you dont game much a single GTX660 will do the job.

Okay. I think I will probably get another 2 x 4gb of ram instead. As my current one is a 2 x 4gb. I think I should have 4 slots.

My computer has been getting cranky recently, which I suspect the graphic card to be the culprit. My screen often freeze with a distorted image then black out and says the video card has stopped working. Sometimes it even goes to bsod. Just yesterday it hanged and can't start up giving me one long beep and three short ones. I took my computer out to vacuum and refix my ram and gpu and noticed that it is burnt. So probably I will need to replace it soon. Or is it possible to utilized 2 graphic card so that one won't go to waste? :s13:

Hi,
I am currently using the same mainboard (Asus P7P55D-E Pro) as TS
and I would like to upgrade my GPU and ram too, but if I am not wrong this
mainboard only supports PCIE 2 right? Most of the recommended GPU
here is PCIE 3 ?
Would appreciate any helpful comments and hope TS wouldn't mind me
posting my questions here :)
