my z68 has been running for a while now, apart from the first few months to a year of problems (rma-ed countless times) my current system has been running fine with some issues that happened last week.

the samsung 830 pro (yes 830 pro) was connected to the sataIII port when it couldn't be detected suddenly and caused a BSOD. I didn't check whether it was detected in bios or not and proceeded to unplug and re-inserting the sata and power cables for the sata III port. When that didn't work I connected the same sata cable to the sataII ports and it works fine ever since.

I did a full scan of the SSD and there are no faults, bad sectors, errors. maybe the bios/chip having a tantrum that day.

tl;dr version: my z68 maybe on it's death throes so maybe time to get a new system

I am considering getting a cpu, m/b and ram and given the relatively high prices of z170 vs X99 (5820k and x99a sli plus/gaming 7) and new intel lga2011 chips next year, I am uncertain which option to go for

get a z170
get a x99 system now
get x99 later.
hang on to the z68 until it really keels over.

Needs: rather simple. not into serious/massive overclocking.
Single graphics card setup and I'm not into video editing so either system would suffice but it needs to be future proof a little.

Must have m.2 slot since I already bought the samsung 950 pro ssd

Note to hwc regulars: no my account didn't get hacked.

I7-6700k and cheap Z170 enough liao based on your needs.

Is the z68 using native SATA3 controller or using 3rd party controller (ASMedia)? Try reinstalling 3rd party controller if applicable.

And if i rmb correctly, there's no Samsung 830 Pro, only the Samsung 830 :D

Or can drop to i5-6600k since u dun really need the 4 extra threads.

Meanwhile u can use the Z68 until it gives up. Try to troublshoot if possible. And backup the Samsung 830 data in case anything happens.

I guess u already set on X99 liao la...:s13:

Intel i7-5820k + MSI X99A SLI PLUS at $937 from PCThemes. Try bargain with YiLong see if u can get $920 or not.

It's the lack of led debugging that annoys me
And the new cpus next year
Otherwise i pull trigger last week

Still got Asus X99-A and MSI X99 Gaming 7. MSI X99 MPower also have, but u may need to request Corbell to indent.

Considering now i5-6600k and i7-6700k in short supply, only routes if u wanna OC are either AMD or Intel X99 liao.

X99 locally only got Asus and MSI. U dun wan Asus, only left MSI. ASRock totally no stock, Gigabyte only left 1 UD4 at Fuwell (could have been gone by now).

Yeap, something with the OC 14nm chips. In short supply ever since they launched. Must be very popular.

For MSI, if u okay with red theme then get the gaming series. If u dun mind the yellow, u can get the XPower or Mpower, but need to indent. Can also cover up the yellow parts to make the XPower/Mpower all-black mobo.
