Advice?

Hi all,

Am doing a Sales Job all these years and intending to stick on this profession down the road. Had a Diploma in IT from a local poly. My concern is is it necessary to have a degree for sales job?

I had come across ppl whom work in well-known company as Sales manager with secondary qualifications. A lot ppl say sales no need qualifications one, most impt is the experience and techniques. How many of you agree with it?

I understand it's always good to have an degree as it enriches each knowledge. If I will to take up a degree, I will oni go for Business or Marketing related degree. I saw there are 1 year, 1year plus degree available in the market offer by MDIS and Kaplan to name afew.

For my case, you guys tink I should take up a degree just for the paper sake? And if you tink so, is 1 year type good enuff?

I've seen ppl doing sales with just diploma doing quite well. But are you sure you will be doing sales forever? Will it happen when one day you get tired of it or the industry you are working in had become very bad and you want to change line?

I would say get a degree more to prepare for future. Since there are those degree like 1-2years only, I guess no harm doing it if you have the spare time and spare cash.

There is a saying which I always hear from my friends and acquaintances in the sales line, which goes something like this, "Good salespeople need not necessarily have the paper, and those who have the paper need not necessarily be good salespeople".

You are true in a certain way that sales people do not need additional qualifications. As for those whom I know, some took degree courses more for self-actualisation in the sense of gaining more knowledge and/or prestige, while a few took because their companies wanted them to (sponsored, of course).

Ya. I did have e tots like you mentioned. But i hav no other specialisations other than doin sales.. hahaha... so gona stick to it foreva.
Ya in fact i had shortlisted two degree courses..one is 1yr, the other 3yrs.
of course 3 yrs is from a more reputable institution. But i was hesitating to go with e 3yrs ,like u guys agree, sales does not need to hav good quali.. meaning employers will usually not see e quali when hiring a sales person. 1 yr is suffice. Agree? LOL..like you mention, getting a degree to prepare for future. Which is the reason y i hav the intention to further rite now.

ya. I have e intention to take up degree purely coz to prepare for future (in case) and gain more knowledge..since i wil b takin up marketing degree. it still can apply to my current job.

Hmm.. but i feel if you want to do something, go the full distance.. if you can afford studying for that 3 yrs, I think you should.. don't take the 'short-cut' and perhaps regret later on..

Whats holding me is actually e duration. I just wan a fast degree coz i foresee i am unable to commit myself for e 3yrs. hahhaah....on e other hand i am worried about e value of e 1yr degree. Contradicting ya..

I kip askin myself if it's necessary for Sales to hav degree. If necessary, any degree wil do or need to b recognise? Do employers look into it when employin Sales?

i am in dilemma now whether to stay at my Dip (good enuf?) or get an 1yr degree.

There are many property agents with just 4 x O levels earning 10-50x more than what you are earning now. Same goes with some of the stock brokers whom I knew. Having said these, some of the degree courses do teach you to think strategically and if you are an enterprising and result-oriented fellow, you may benefit from these insights but again, it depends on the level of ingenuity that you possessed to make it work.

IMO, from a monetary and remuneration standpoint, the sales line is one of the few jobs that does not have any so-called income ceiling, which means you could earn as much as you want. That being said, some product knowledge, connections and sales know-how are the key things to success.

If you want to take the degree based on your reasons, by all means go ahead. As for myself a university education really opened up my mind and changed some of my views of the world.

I took econs and management. Took me 3 years.

And I came from an engineering background prior to the degree.

Ts, I used to work in sales line as well. Last time my co got an opening for asst sales manager. The manager, who happened to my uncle, short listed the 2 top salesman; One with degree and the other one with just o levels.

Guess who he promoted? So having a degree in sales still do have its value.
