Advise needed for a failed hard disk

Hi, I need some inputs from you guys here.

I have a failed drive that is unable to boot up.

It cannot be detected in BIOS, when inserted into the system the windows loading screen loads longer than usual.

Once boot up windows attempt to install the diver for the drive and it did.
But just not the correct one I think. it's showing as a "ATA device" instead of a standard hard disk name like "WDC WD640xxxxxx"

Under disk management, it is shown as a unknown disk which is not initialized.

Attempts to initialize it will be shown with "The request could not be performed because of an I/O error"

Does booting into a linux OS works?

Also how do I know if it's a mechanical problem?

Does swapping the PCB board work?

Appreciate any inputs.

Modern drive cannot just swap PCB, it don't work.
Get a new drive if warranty is over, else RMA it.

I have the same issue with my 2TB Seagate hdd. Just occured to me last week and i definitely need the data.

Difference is, mine is able to be detected in BIOS, but in Windows, it shows these:-

If you encounter I/O errors for for your drive, it could mean one of the following.

1) If your disk still can be detected by BIOS, it could be infected by virus or the MBR is missing or some files system are corrupted. Reformatting your drive should clear the problem. You may also use DiskPart available in Win7 to clean your drive.

Use data recovery software to recover your data if data is important before reformatting.

2) If the problem persists, or if your disk cannot be detected by BIOS, it could be a firmware or hardware issue.

Check your cables and connectors and try different ports. Or computers. Have a look at the PCB and notice any burnt marks or smells.

Discard or send your disk for RMA as jtjt00 suggested or seek professional help if data is important.

I handed over my hdd to the following shop as recommended. He told me if they cannot do anything, no cost. But if can, 80 dollars. I was shocked... too cheap, right?!?! Well, he says he will contact me in 2 days time.

level 6-38, its an Indian store, I did my recovery there and I paid 80 dollars, but mine was software corrupted and not physical damage tho..

For situation such as seen in the picture where the disk becomes uninitialized and unformatted, and capacity becomes different from the stated capacity, it'll require specialised data recovery tools to recover the data. Software data recovery programs will not be able to help as the disk needs to be detected in the first place for software programs to work.

As the hard disk was not detected by the BIOS, the WD software would not be able to detect the drive.

I was not able to see any burn marks on the hard disk (I did not take out the PCB).

I have tried different ports and even use HDD dock to no avail.

I guess I'll be needing specialized help to recover any data then.

Is there any service that can help to replace the PCB?

Specifically for your case, your disk is still spinning, but cannot be detected by BIOS or detected as a ATA device, it shows that there is nothing wrong with the PCB.

Replacing the PCB will not work in your case.

This is more of a firmware,faulty heads or platters issue.

What if it can be detected in BIOS? In Disk Management, it prompts to be initialised, but when i click OK, it doesnt initialise.

Shows 128GB unallocated in Disk Management instead of 2TB.

Hmm... Before the episode my hard disk actually had a warning for "Current Pending Sector Count", then after that it cannot be detected anymore.

Do you know what is the cause?

Most common cause is faulty heads. Another possible cause is the deterioration of the platters causing bad sectors.

Bad sectors will increase exponentially if you do not monitor it carefully. This will eventually kill your drive, which gives the name 'Dead Drive'. Bad sectors can also occur on the firmware areas which makes data recovery even more challenging.

I went to Accplus to service my disk. No investigation charges from them. The cause was platter n I had to bury my disk
