Typically, how much would it cost?

Depending on which company you go to, the range can vary from $900 to $3800 for a 2TB drive as each company diagnose differently and have their own pricing structure.

Check around and go to the one that you trust and feel comfortable working with.

If HDD can be detected in BIOS but somehow uninitialised in Windows, use a data recovery software to see if the header is just corrupted

Use manufacturer diagnostic tools to check hdd error

DO NOT REFORMAT or attempt to recover onto the same disk. Always try recovering to another disk

If 2-3 different recovery software cannot detect any usable data inside, ask yourself how much the data is worth

Most of the recovery shops that claim to offer "cheap" recovery services are only able to do software recovery or at most, pcb swap. Worse is if they attempted to help you recover but end up writing something to the hdd. Means you just pwned yourself without knowing it...
Coz accepted practice is to NEVER write back to the same hdd or at least, make an image of the hdd before attempting recovery. Making the image is extremely time consuming if hdd is large...

I remember several years ago when 320GB hdds were just introduced, it took me 3 weeks non-stop to backup a 1.8TB Raid 5 array....

Very few are able to do the recovery by opening up the hdd.
ADRC or ADRIOIT is one of them. but as Louis mentioned, prices are several hundred and up, depending on the size of the hdd. hence ask yourself how much the data is worth....

Sorry to hijack this thread. I too have an external WD 2.5" hdd which failed me out of a sudden.

One fine day my pc hanged, when i restart it, I wasn't able to open up My Computer in a proper manner (Win 7 btw). The green loading bar went very slowly moving like neverending. the ext hdd drive was there at J: but nothing much i can do, the moment i try to click on anything, it goes not responding. I can't seem to think of anyways to do anything to the hdd.

At this stage, even if I use recovery tools like Easeus, I cannot select that particular drive that I want to recover. Very sad now cos all my photos I had since my first camera all inside and I need to recover the memories.

Is there a trustworthy place i can go to in SG for recovery services, any bros know of any to recommend?
