For a gaming rig, no need to go for so high specs. Just spend moderately on the rig, splurge the rest on high quality monitors. Coz monitors are the ones your eyes see when you game, not the CPU rig. Here you go:

CPU+MB: Intel i5-4670k + AsRock Z87 Extreme 4 - $559
RAM: Kingston PC3-1600 DDR3 8GB - $76
GPU: Powercolor HD 7970 3GB OC DDR5 - $529
SSD: Plextor M5S 256GB - $249
HDD: Tosgiba 2TB 7200rpm - $118
PSU: Seasonic M12II 750W 80+ Bronze - $139
Casing+CPU Cooler: Corsair H80 Liquid Cooling + NZXT Phantom 410 - $269 (bundle pricing)
ODD: Samsung 24x DVD SATA - $25
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit - $120 (dun use Win8 for gaming)

Total: $2084 (prices referenced from PCThemes pricelist)

If u really need to spend $3k for the rig, use the remaining budget to buy a 2560x1440 resolution monitor. Either Asus PB278Q or Dell U2713HM.
