hi bros, need some advise on upgrading my pc part due to some low fps happen to my game recently.

lets say i have 500$ budget what are you recommended parts?

currently using

NVIDIA GeForce GTX970(msi,twin frozen)
Intel Core i7 4790
ASUS H97-PRO GAMER motherboard.

interested in only changing GPU and CPU but just incase some gpu/cpu doesnt goes well with motherboard then yea might consider changing it as well.

The i7-4790 is just about the best CPU (other than i7-4790K) for your Haswell board. No point changing.

The GPU is dated. For your rig and budget, I would suggest a used GTX 1080 or GTX 1070Ti. Alternatively, add another $100+ for new 5700XT.

thanks for the recommendation on gpu! is RTX better for gaming?(heard its better here and there)

because my game actually use more CPU than GPU from what i heard , thats why have thoughts of changing but then if its good enough then i might drop the idea!

thanks for the midnight reply!

You can consider the RTX 2070 Super but that's $700+ and above. As the guy below posted, it is better to get a used GTX 1070Ti instead. Save the money for when you are ready to do a new rig.

It's not that the CPU is good enough. Just that there is no viable upgrade path for your current MB. A upgrade here will mean CPU+MB+RAM and not just the CPU.

Just sharing my experience. I had a similar system in terms of gaming performance to yours (i5 4690 + 970) at the start of the year. Upgraded from GTX970 to a GTX 1070ti, there is improvement but can feel that the old processor is limiting the graphic card. Then I upgraded from my Haswell processor to Ryzen 3600, every game is like at least +20fps and feels alot smoother.

So for a start, depend on your budget, you can go either CPU+MB+RAM or get a better graphic card first.

I gave my GTX 970 to my nephew, and built him a ryzen 3600 system and I can say that system feels much better than when I was running i5 4690 and GTX 970. For example, can run destiny 2 max settings very smoothly 80+ fps at 1080p.

I wanted to echo this sentiment as I've recently went from i5 4670 to Ryzen 5 3600, and from DDR3 1600MHz 2x8gb to DDR4 3200MHz 2x8gb RAM.

The main game I play is Battlefield 5, and using MSI Afterburner, I realised the main bottleneck was always the CPU. My FPS in BF5 at almost all low settings will start around 70FPS and drop to 40-50FPS with noticeable stutters after 45min of gaming. After the CPU+Mobo+RAM upgrade, I can play at a consistent 70 - 80 smooth FPS now.

Granted, I have the gtx 1060, but I suggest you use a software to check which is the real bottleneck in your favorite game first before you upgrade. $500 either gets you the CPU+Mobo+RAM or a new GPU. You technically can sell your old parts to push your budget up another $100 - $150 as well.

Those are good prices for a GTX 1070Ti but do check the condition during purchase, in particular, check for rust. At these prices, the cards could be mining cards.

ah i see, thanks for further more explanation ! i might just get 2nd handed gpu for now as it much cheaper than my budget stated here as well!
