would like to seek the input of fellow users here, as I'm weighing up the options of getting a new CPU

being a basic home user (surfing net, steaming videos, writing images/videos onto CDs), would it be more cost effective to purchase off the shelf (which may have what I don't need, since the options are fixed), or custom one that has exactly what I need (which isn't really a lot to begin with :s13:)?

have read some of the previous threads in this sub-forum, some of those horror encounters with unethical SLS shops leave me wondering if it's worth the risk going with custom made system

would think a 4GB or 6GB RAM, with 500GB hard disk will be more than sufficient for my usage...might not even need microsoft office on the system given that I hardly bring work home...clueless about mobo, graphic cards though

any advise/opinion please?

budget most impt...

yes indeed! i would say anything under 1k?

still struggling if it should be
- cheapest possible (get what I need only, bare essentials)
- more flexibility (getting better parts, if it translates into durability then it's well worth the upcharge)

my current setup is a DIY set that serve me well over the past decade (with some minor hiccups along the way) so durability is one factor that could weigh heavily in my decision making

what is your current rig setup?

to cut cost, you can consider just to hook up a ssd and wait till your current rig die then get a new one.

woah good question, it's quite an old rig running on windows XP, was DIY by an old friend so I would believe a lot of the components are mix-n-match together

If you are scared, just go PCT or look for Nigel. So far many years already I have never heard they scam anybody. Should be safe. Other shops I dunno.
