In a bit of a situation, require advice from the hidden pc gurus

My brother bought a new Aftershock P-13, 500GB M.2 Samsung 960 SSD with i7 8550U.

Clean install Windows 10 and drivers, on HIGH PERFORMANCE mode, cpu frequency is locked to 1.1Ghz on battery, though i7 8550U is rated 1.8Ghz up to 4.0Ghz turbo.
On AC cpu is okay, but on battery it only runs at 1.1Ghz even on stress test.

The support guy claims that since Intel 6th gen processors, CPU frequency is halved for all processors on battery.

Anyone has similar issues? I am wondering if it is hardware related, or if a refund is possible.

I don't believe that is the case, or at least this is the first time I am hearing it. It could be something implemented for Intel's i5/i7 8xxx ULV processors as a result of the increase in core count, that I am not sure.

Normally all ULV processors is not able to sustain at a high clockspeed due to the low 15W TDP. It will burst to the turbo speed and throttle down. I am using the older Kaby Lake i5 7200U, and it will certainly burst to about 2.4 to 3.1Ghz even on battery. At idle, it will throttle down between 700Mhz to 1Ghz.

Thanks for the clarification

I had a feeling the guy had no idea what he was talking about. Anyone else bought the p13?

You can always check with someone from Aftershock again.

I feel they probably configured it in this manner to extend battery life. Intel allow manufacturers to adjust the TDP according to their need.

Got a call from them earlier, they are investigating the issue. At this point they can't confirm if it's hardware or software, hopefully it can be resolved soon

I suspect this can be resolved from a BIOS update. I don't think it is a hardware issue since it works as advertised when the laptop is being charged.
