I also have the same problem. Usually swallowing or yawning helps. Otherwise I take lozenges.

once i got flu and my ears were blocked. when the air pressure changed as the plane took off and landed, terrible pain developed in my ears.

discovered a good trick. take a deep breath, and then close your mouth and nose, and blow out as hard as possible. this would force air into the middle ear, and balance out the air pressure difference.

i read this method not recommended if you got flu for risk of ear infection.

breathe in to take air into your lungs and then breathe out gently *but* with your mouth closed and nostrils pinched with your fingers. yes, gently but i'm impatient so i always breathed out hard. it's up to you to adjust the amount of force used.

I always buy a tube of mentos (mint type) and start chewing on them once the airplane is getting ready to take off! The mint helps to open the air passages and the chewing action helps relieve the air pressure. 1 tip is to start chewing on them before the plane is in the air. HTHs!

i'm not saying it doesn't work, i used this method myself. :)

i'm saying if you got cold/flu, using this method to equalize the pressure may risk ear infection as you are forcing air (which may contain flu virus thru eustachian tube.
