I am thinking maybe can place my two AX40 inside the kitchen when cooking,,,but the filter life span will shortened very quickly...

Pls dont do that. Just get a 18 inch air circulator and pump fresh air into the kitchen.

Light frying (eg vegetables) gets you ard 200-300 ug/m3 range). Maybe 5 mins peak exposure. Bell curve.

Deep and heavy frying goes deep into the 1000ug/m3 range in an enclosed kitchen space.

Kitchen cooking oil fumes contain PAHs, aldehydes and acrolein. Google the link, it's pretty well established.

However you would need quite a lot of it and over the years exposure. That said, it does not mean that you shd not care about that "mere" 1200 ug/m3 15-min exposure to your baby coz it's a mindset thingy, bochup once and you will bochup for years and for everyone incld people with stroke/heart attack risk. Eg, i would not ask someone who has had strokes before to go have smokey korean BBQ, his life is messed up enough.

Some pro cooks in not well ventilated kitchen facilities suffer from this also. So do folks in rural areas.

Kids and infants are going to be even more susceptible.

I think the filtration system in hood dont really remove grease and polluted air. Unless yours is like those commerical restuarant which have hoods exhaust air to the outside.

HDB ones recirculate the “dirty” air back. the circular black colored AC absorb the smell whilst the metal mesh is said to absorb the grease and “cleanse” the air.

Now I told my maid to open windows and ban my 2 young kids from going into the kitchen if she is cooking. think long term damage will be similar to haze from indonesia.

I think even unducted hoods should remove some grease IF it is working properly. The problem is when people don't perform maintenance regularly enough (commensurate with cooking frequency), then efficiency drops over time as the filters get clogged by grease. It's just like aircon, you don't clean the filters, you're not gonna have a good time :o

Some cases might also be installation mistake, if installed too high above the cooking area, might be ineffective.

What I do is this: I have a standing fan in the kitchen. When cooking, open kitchen windows, fan full blast outwards.

Another tip is to turn it on 5 mins before you start to cook, so that when you start cooking, the air is already circulating. Plus leave it on for some time after cooking instead of turning off immediately. Will also help. This is something mentioned in most hood manuals as well. Of course, may be useless if filters have not been maintained. :s13:

http://www.besthoods.co.uk/2011/08/...cooker-hood-and-keep-your-kitchen-odour-free/

It was also shown that the fumes spread to neighbouring rooms, and that leaving the kitchen extraction hood on for 30 minutes after the end of frying reduced the spreading significantly

EXPOSURE TO COOKING FUMES DURING THE PAN FRYING OF BEEFSTEAK UNDER DOMESTIC AND OCCUPATIONAL CONDITIONS

The manual warns against running it WHILE cooking, but does say you can run it AFTER the cooking.

Hi WussRedXLi,

I am new to this thread as I am also looking for a air purifier. After reading all the threads, I gathered that knowing the calculation is essentially the factor to determine which model to buy. Unfortunately, i am damn bad at numbers. Can you please advice your statement

"This low 300+ m3/hr range provides an excellent ACH number about 7-8 ACH"

How do you determine that airflow above (i assume is the same term as CADR) will provide the stated ACH ( i assume the higher the better)

Small note : technically, CADR is not the airflow, but the difference is pretty small. In real life usage, (esp with heavy external loading like 2015's haze) you wouldn't find a noticeable difference at all, and probably is only appreciable on a laser particle counter as a number. So essentially, most of us use the numbers interchangeably.

To calculate ACH, just divide the airflow or CADR number (basically the "performance" number) by the volume of the room.

3.5 x 4.5m x 2.9m height room = 45m3.
Give 30% discount due to bed, TV console and cabinets = 31.5m3.

The ACH is already ~ 10 ACH.

This kind of thing can really kill in minutes for those in the susceptible/sensitive grp like asthmatics etc.

5-digits ug/m3.

Thanks for the explaination. I was looking at xiaomi 1 because it has 408m3/h. However when i look at philip 4014 for eg... its says it can cover up to 55m2 area size but cadr at 279m3/h. Which data will you recommend i should look at? My intend was to get one in living room because my husband smokes. I know it can't 100% get rid of the odour. But at least it helps than not putting one at all. My current model at turbo mode only gives out 183m3/h. Maybe due to the hepa and carbon been old. I do not see the effect. So thinking of getting a bigger capacity one. My living room is about 600sqft with open kitchen. And big balcony

The AC4372 is ard the airflow of the AX40. 300+ m3/hr range.

Hi, so for this eg... AC4372 can cover up to 65m2. But you said airflow is about 300+ m3/h. In this case can i calculate this way? 60m2 = 464m3. Meaning this machine does not even acheive 1 ach?

To keep it simple, basically for any machine, look at the airflow specs. m3/h

Then, we must also consider the sound pressure level of the machine at this specced airflow. Quite a few people may be affected by this during night time, there could be a few who don't care about this. This can be a little bit tricky to compare as there are some companies that spec a very low dB figure, simply coz that is in night mode fan speed. Literally all machines are dead silent at these ultra low fan speeds, unsurprisingly.

I really don't know how did you get your calculation though. ACH is just the airflow divide by the volume of the room. 300 m3/hr airflow. Vol of room is say 5m length x 4m width x 2.9m height = 58 m3. You may or may not want to reduce 20% of that due to furniture etc. 300 divide by 58 = 5.2 Air Change per Hour.

Oh... i was reading one of the thread. One of the member says he bought philip ac4372 model which able to cover up to 60m2. And later i saw your reply stating that this model has 300+ m3/h. I use google to convert m2 to m3 eg 60m2 = 464m3. Can i use such estimation to derive the ACH? Or must i physically measure my room?
