I have an Airport Extreme that is at least 2 years old
Is it possible that the performance can deteriorate. The users in my house sometimes say the wifi connection isn't so good and can be slow. And that can be even when sitting very near the router

Wired is OK

Nothing wrong with the speed of connection. It is 1GBPS

Thanks

"Sometimes" is a very tricky term to use. Most of the time it's a *user* problem. :D

Just to be sure, test out different wifi devices at time of complaint.

Firmware up to date?
Have you tried to restore to factory and reconfigure the AirPort Extreme?
Could be overcrowded channels used, setting a static, less used channel may help.

Yes I agree with the statement that the user is the problem. In this case the user is always my wife!:s13:

I just on/off the iPad and it seem to resolve because there was nothing wrong with my other devices reception at the time

Could also be due to wifi congestion in your area, use wifi analyser or any similar software to find out if your neighbours are the culprit :)

hah, so it's just the ipad...

Does turning off wifi on the ipad and back on help?without turning off the ipad itself.

There's a few things you can do:
1. Reset network settings on the ipad
2. Erase all contents and settings on the ipad(make sure you backup your data first)
3. Restore iPad using iTunes on computer(make sure you backup your data first)

Not sure what this means. Is it possible for neighbours to affect me? They dont know my router password so cant logon.

Or do you mean interference from their signals?

Thx

there are only a handful of wifi channels for use and if your selected channel is also used by thy neighbours, you will experience signal interference resulting in lower performance from your router.

I'm running iOS8 with Airport extreme (old version) as a AP. Got cellular issue but didn't notice any wifi issues and the whole user experience on my old ipad2 feels slow with the new os.

just test using free apps in e AppStore that can do ping tests. u should see high latency n dropped packets.

with speed test, result is consistent with previous versions of iOS. With ping app, the first ping took longer ranges between 35 to 90 ms, subsequent pings ranges between 2 to 11 ms averages around 8-10ms. So far, tested with more than 1000 pings, no dropped packets.

I'm getting the same result (+1-2ms) on external site. Anyway, internal site is a better gauge if the objective is to test if ios8 (and airport extreme) is causing wifi latency issues.
