Just checking,

Is it worth getting the Airport Extreme to improve the overall Wifi coverage rather than getting the recently release Asus AC router? If possible, share your reviews if you do own 1! Thanks! :s12:

According to what others had comments, the range/coverage and throughput are not as great as Asus.

Had setup the AC Time Capsule(Main Router) and AEBS(Extended Mode) for my BIL in his 4-bedder unit, overall wifi ok lah, definitely have to separate 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz broadcast cos combining both signal as 1 SSID, wifi fluctuate very badly.

Generally, AEBS are easy to setup but lacks customisation. If I remembered correctly, the AC model doesn't even allow you to choose radio mode also.

The reason he bought the above is just for simple setup and also he wanted a complete Apple Eco-system to run in his place.;)

simple setup? most routers has simple setup actually. it's simple only if u using multiple apple network devices.
i replaced mine coz it's getting yellowish and the wifi range.
it's definitely a keeper if it's a unibody case

I have been using AEBS since Sep 2012. I was quite fed up with the limited wifi range of SingTel's Aztech 7002 router and decided to buy an AEBS as my primary wifi access point (bridge mode).

I bought the AEBS (5th gen) because I wanted a simple set-up that even my wife can troubleshoot on her own should that be necessary and AEBS fits the bill in this respect. It has performed well requiring no re-booting since I initially set it up.

The wifi coverage for the AEBS is also good as it provides wifi access for all corners of our 2-storey house. So far, have not discovered any wifi dead-spots in the house.

I have no complains about the wifi speed. The bottleneck is more with the internet speed of accessing overseas websites than my wifi speed.

Recently, my AEBS died (don't know why). Had it replaced as it was still under warranty (AppleCare Protection Plan). However, I used the opportunity to buy the new Airport Time Capsule. Did not notice any siginificant improvement in speed or coverage from the Time Capsule. Maybe, my set-up was already optimised hence even with the new faster and better equipment, improvements are not that noticeable.

I own the 6th gen Time Capsule which has wireless ac. If you own Apple Macbooks or iMac which has wireless ac then it's going to fly! I'm on Singtel 200mbps and I'm getting full speed on my ac ready iMac through WiFi.

Can I ask whats your opinion on the transfer speed for the Time capsule? Looking to get a router with a built in HDD. Dont need the AC wireless speed of DIR-865L as I am using LAN.

Thanks for your replies guys! Just to check, I'm thinking of purchase a refurbish Airport Extreme or Airport Extreme base station to try out since i can return it within 14 days if I'm not satisfy with the product.

Which one would you guys recommend as I'm currently on the latest Gen MBPr.

Huh? Don't get you. Apple only has the following routers:-

(1) AirPort Express
(2) AirPort Extreme
(3) AirPort Time Capsule

Are you trying to decide btwn AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme?

Extreme has faster wifi speed (ac) but Express has a socket for AirPlay. Extreme more expensive. Express much smaller.

If price and size are not a factor, I would go for Extreme since it has the latest technology in terms of wireless standard (ac) whilst the Express is still on (n).

Since you have the latest MBPr, you may want to get the current generation of Airport Extreme which supports ac, so be careful when you select refurbish Airport extreme which may be previous generation.

Apple had shorten the naming of the latest Extreme and had started to create confusing.. :s13::s13::s13:!!!

Apple Extreme Base Station(aka AEBS) = up to 5th generation (up to 802.11N)
Apple Extreme = Latest generation (802.11AC)

@TS - It really depends on yourself - get the AC model if budget not an issue and it's also kinda future-proof. ;)
