so i just came back a couple of weeks ago from the Autumn Alpen route
hence decided to share i couldn't find, hopefully i can answer simple questions about this place

the resources are below and i will update as i go along, ive been around from osaka to alpen route to tokyo this trip, but i shall stick to the alpen route alpine route in this thread, but i am sorry i cannot answer you anything about the up coming snow wall =(

1. https://www.alpen-route.com/en/
autumn leave guide 2017 -- https://www.alpen-route.com/en/tateyama-kurobe-alpine-route-autumn-leaves-information

please be AWARE that not all trails are board walks, some of them make you wander through the foliage and its not all pretty yellow and red, some of it are like tall shrubs i.e. jungle trails which are very soaking wet if it rained/bad cloudy weather the previous day
so if you don't have waterproof hiking boots, i don't suggest you try them
stick to the ones along the slopes are best =)

Finer details of my trip

img_area.png

img_routemap.png

1. i went from Osaka ->Gero -> shirakawago -> Tateyama -> all the 7 modes of transport :s22: -> ogizawa -> bus to nagano -> Hokuriku shinkansen to tokyo

2. the only way to cross the dam is to walk, so if its pouring, you still have to walk and its quite a distance (not VERY FAR) to the bus you have to cut through the whole mountain, so is the tunnel trolley bus

3. most people, when i was there, buy a day pass, they come up, climb, walk around, go down
4. those who stayed are those who climb and trek other routes too.
5. the trains DO BREAKDOWN, at least the toyama chiho highway can break down.
They will just get a bus to bring you up there.
6. The alpine pass allows you unlimited rides and stops amongst all modes of transportation
usually maximised when you stay at murudo area and you go around the whole place and back to the hotel

7. Also maximised when you travel up and down the Tateyama Highland stops which is -
Bijodaira <-> Midagahara <-> Tengudaira, where hotel Kogen is <-> Murudo, where the tateyama peak and
lakes are. Of course you can walk 30 mins through the valley between Tengudaira <-> Murudo, you should
anyway, personal recommendation =)

update

18 march 2018

a guide on walking up to the peak from murudo, and some pics of climbing to the peak itself
it is on page 4 of this thread.

first post is on the ticketing tip/trick/guide at tateyama station

second post....
Generally, my aim to allay some factors of consideration people have about climbing up to the peak.
Yes the japanese elderly can do it, but you know, our typical elderly is .... you know
so i hope the visuals can help you with that thought/planning process

Nice information, i will be heading there on the 8th November. Are there much things to see around Murodo area? Can I check you went there with Dentsutoyama or Ogizawa as starting point?

I am comparing the fare on the official website and this website I chance upon, thinking it might be cheaper...

It will be closed by 30th November this year. The Tateyama Alpine Route option ticket will not be for sale from 8th Nov onwards, and last day of use is 12th November (iirc). The route is still open till 30th Nov, but need to buy individual tickets liao.

Nov go anyway don't have the snow wall right ?

Seems like that is the key attraction.

Oct nov is peak for autumn leaves

Ya november no more snow wall. Snow wall from April till August or something...?

the snow wall is like 5/6 stories high but its starts from the vally
so its like 10 12 stories of snow :s22:
covering the entire mountain range

usually till july, but of course it will be smaller and thinner
if your lucky august will have some left

one point up the walk towards tateyama peak
at 0:09 , that building is Murudo check point, which is where most tourist go directly to
and the white patch on the left is the last of the glaciers from previous winter

Autumn colours @ Daikanbo looking down, which is the main highlight of autumn tateyama and starting point of the tateyama ropeway

Autumn colours @ Kurobedaira looking up, which is still the main highlight of autumn tateyama and ending point of the tateyama ropeway

and they are all in 4K
sorry if i pan too quickly =/

i spent my nights at
http://www.t-kogen.com/
https://goo.gl/maps/6AaoAoTnMcH2

its a midway point alternative place haha, but price wise not much different then murudo itself !
some of the pics of kogen on google maps is from meeee LOL

cause murudo itself was full, staying here means when you come down you got to tell the bus driver you are alighting here
and you have to book your spot with the hotel reception when coming up to murudo

this pic
midagahara and kogen are opposite of each other on the same road
the purple track ,curvy one, i walked it from kogen to murudo, very very nice view =)

as usual if it is rainy/cloudy , all the steps will be filled with water like a waterfall up to 1-2cm height, better be waterproof man

Thank you ... I love that place. We would prefer to take the train, bus, cable from toyama to murodo ... & hike for 5-6 hours.
