Initially i know nothing about him, when he entered the room everyone was so surprised, i thought they're just exaggerating for TV effect
after watching the documentary then i understand why the Koreans have such a reaction. Lee Sedol is really a legend in SK.
“AlphaGo look like the real mirror. When you play with AlphaGo, you feel very strange. You look like you’re all the time naked. The first time you see this, you don’t want to see because ‘Oh, this is me? Real me?’ And more than more, you need accept. ‘Oh this is real me. So how? Now, how can I do?’” (Fan Hui, AlphaGo)
Short summary.
AI has defeated human in various board games for a long time now (IBM's AI, Deep Blue, famously defeated world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997).
However the 1 game that AI has never defeat a human pro player was Go (WeiQi)
People always assumed that AI will never be able to defeat a professional Go player, as Go is deemed so complex that it's impossible for AI to calculate the moves required.
But that changed in 2016, when AlphaGo defeated the European Go champion and marks the 1st time in history that an AI defeated a professional Go player.
And the next step was to challenge Lee Sedol, one of the best Go player in the world at that time.
