Cat... 17yo. sometimes, he tried to lick his back den suddenly seized up lying on the floor, hind leg automatically start scratching very hard. in addition, he keep licking his lips and try to bite/lick his own body (anywhere) to release...

wonder what cause this and how to avoid.
Fleas maybe? Best go see a vet, might also be hyperthyroidism or liver disease

oh..... he recovered! thanks for asking..... Honestly, his condition back then was quite bad even after seeing the vet.... I just keep putting the oilment the vet issued.... and clean the his ear... and amazingly.... he totally recovered a week before CNY...... One thing I found that his watery left eye may has something to do with his ear, as i notice his left ear is always much more dirtier than his right ear.........so these days, at least twice a week, i will clean his ears, again, sincerely thanks for asking... APPRECIATE!

Hi, why is Megestrol Acetate (Ovaban) literally impossible to get at vets in Singapore for temporary estrus suppression/delay while waiting for spaying when it is so commonly administered in many other places for cat estrus control and considered safe? (and incidentally spaying appointments have ridiculous waiting times here and my cat always goes into heat conveniently right when the appointment approaches so since I don't want to subject her to the increased risk of bleeding to death in surgery I have to reschedule and pray that the new date months later does not coincide with her heat)

One clinic literally told me "heat is a natural thing so we should let it take its course and not interfere with it artificially, that's why we don't prescribe MA." Yeah and going by their logic spaying is something that occurs in nature, eh?

If the drug isnt widely used, suppliers dont take it in. Singapore is not known as a pedigree breeding ground unlike Australia or other European countries so the vet clinics that will stock this drug is likely very few. You would have to check around which vet clinic in Singapore specialise in reproductive work for small animals. I dont think I have come across any clinics in Singapore doing repro work so the number might be zero

Hello. Thanks for doing this AMA. I would like to seek some advice. My 13yo dog which was previously v active suddenly lost strength on both his hind legs (was still able to run around in the afternoon, but was unable to weight bear after his night walk. Now he can walk sometimes albeit unstable, but other times he cannot even stand). Brought him to a vet and they suggested some scans that require GA as they worry that it might be spinal/neuro related and cost about $7k.

I’m wondering if the risk of GA for my old dog is dangerous as I fear he might not wake up from it. Also I’m worried about his quality of life (he really loves to go everywhere) if he can’t walk anymore and that if it’s something that’s treatable but I deprive him of the chance. Also are u able to recommend a vet that might help provide a second opinion as I’m at my wits’ end. Thank you!

That is true. An older dog/cat/human will pose a GA risk and unfortunately there isnt much around it except to run pre-GA bloods, take blood pressure and ensure your dog doesnt have any pre-existing co-morbidities. If the risk is unacceptable, can trial meds like NSAIDs or steroids or Librela or Cartrophen or any combination. Without working up the case it will be very difficult to say what it is and if its curative or not

My go to referral is Dr Patrick Maguire from Beecroft Animal Hospital, he is a board certified surgical specialist in veterinary surgery.

Don't mind me asking a question.
Can Librela go with Cartrophen? My dog is about 11 yrs old with Osteoarthritis, but we have moved from Cartrophen to Librela for about 4 months, but find that Librela is not really helping, so was thinking of either go for both or go back to Cartrophen. Cartrophen did shown slight improvement for about 2 weeks. Seeking a second opinion here. Thanks.

Yes, add on NSAIDs if safe to do so

Hello, not sure if this thread is still active. But my cat (6 months) was zooming around and crashed into me. Now he is suddenly walking with a limp. But still eating well and playful though I notice he’s not running as much. Still keeps jumping onto the bed and sofa though. Is this a sprain? Should I bring him to the vet?

Yes, bring to a vet to check if got dislocation or fracture

Yes. Best to minimize interaction with dogs of unknown vaccination status and keep indoors as parvo can survive well in the environment

Hi, thank you for this AMA thread. I’m curious to know what could be the possible causes, including non-scientific reasons, that might lead to the death of a dog on the 1st or 2nd day after moving to a new house? Just to clarify, it’s not a pet dog and prior to the moving she was fine and active. Thank you.

Pre-existing medical condition whether it be diagnosed or undiagnosed coupled with the stress of moving probably set the dog over the edge
