Basically... instead of having a dedicated GPU + CPU on the laptop mobo, it is now on a module.

Meaning today's laptops are also AMD inside by the same reasoning.

makes no sense with ryzen apus already out though?

Ryzen APU still not in the wilds.
Anyway I think such product is intended for Apple.
Since most Apple iMac and etc. are using Intel and AMD
but on different dies.

I thought the main purpose of Vega was for compute. Like etherum mining. And scaled down Vega was just an afterthought (hell, why doesn't Ryzen mobile have this?!)

by the way, the Coffee lake chip still has it's working integrated graphics. This Vega only kicks in when in games.

So it really is some kind of hack job. Hopefully Ryzen Mobile will eventually have some closer integration if they come out with such a solution. If they could get Hybrid Crossfire working properly....

Or of that nice stack of HBM2 can be directly accessed by the processor as well.

Checks date. Nowhere near April.

Checks URL. Not the Onion.

Looks out the window. Flap flap flap. Yup, pigs are flying...

This is more for HQ series laptop processors, like those used on MacBook Pro 15 which uses discrete Nvidia 750M and 950M graphics. I think this will allow a sub 2kg 15" laptop to be nearing the profile of the current 13" 1.2kg-1.4kg laptop.

I believe the next top end NUC replacing the current 6770HQ Skull NUC will be the 8770HQ with the Vega GPU instead of the Iris Pro graphics.

Agree, AMD is not strong in mobile segment.
Probably that is one reason why they work with Intel for that.
I own AMD notebooks with Dual Graphics/Hybrid Crossfire.

However Dual Graphics/Hybrid Crossfire is not a prefect tech,
firstly mainly due to lack of proper drivers from OEM.
You can use driver from AMD but on some notebook the dual
graphic may not work properly.

Whether will that change with Ryzen mobile, no one knows.
