[Updated] AMD Makes a Breakthrough in Improving Frame Latency

Good news for people with AMD cards!:D

[Update 1]
BF3_2560x1440_PLOT_0.png

The orange is the old drivers, dark purple is the new prototype drivers.

[Update 2]
Not sure if the current drivers/beta drivers (eg. Cat 13.4/13.5 Beta) are the new "prototype drivers" but looks like a lot of you guys reported positive results. It certainly looks good for AMD users.

[Update 3]
Looks like Cat 13.5 Beta drivers are not the "prototype drivers". You can see the improvements in this video.

[NOTE] This fix does not yet address Eyefinity + CrossFire problems. The prototype and the current implementation of the fix are only going to address single monitor configurations due to the differences in how the multiple rendered images are composited. Resolutions up to 2560x1600 are handled by a hardware compositor while the 5760x1080 and above Eyefinity resolution use a software implementation that is apparently much more complex (and causes quite a few graphical issues we'll dive into later).

AMD has been criticized by some tech publications over Radeon HD 7000 series posing higher frame-latency over NVIDIA GeForce chips, even in cases where AMD's chips offer higher frame-rates. "Frame latency" or "frame time" was purported as a metric of the same importance as frame-rates, in graphics card reviews. Various essentially identical methods were used to show that AMD Radeon GPUs yield higher frame latency (time taken for frames drawn by the GPU to make it to the display) than NVIDIA GeForce ones, even in cases where AMD's chips offer higher frame-rates. AMD has apparently made a significant breakthrough in improving frame latency.

In January, AMD made its first official response to early tests that showed Radeon GPUs to pose higher frame latency. In its defense, AMD stated that frame-latency issues are not a hardware design flaw, and can be ironed out by optimizing drivers to the redesigned memory controllers on GPUs based on its Graphics CoreNext architecture. Sources told us that AMD is ready with its first prototype drivers that fix frame latency issues. These drivers are pre-alpha, and are made available to select industry partners, with an adequate level of competence and expertise, since a week now. After AMD takes feedback from these partners, the company will begin rolling out the first beta drivers, followed by WHQL-signed ones.

Cool!! Nice to hear such news!!

OK, I stretch my budget, Going to hoot this card. Today went SLS but see no 7990. GTX690 also super rare.... Feel like hooting 690 but insist to wait for 7990.

This is good news. At least this can dispel any worries about buying an AMD card.

I won't really call it a breakthru tho. I think these micro stutter shld have been addressed from the start. I've tried playing Skyrim using older drivers and it was noticible and tired my eyes out really fast.

AMD releases Catalyst 13.5 beta, 13.4 WHQL graphics drivers - The Tech Report

If you prefer to be on the bleeding edge, you'll probably want to grab the new Catalyst 13.5 beta release. That driver isn't certified by Microsoft, but it promises the following performance improvements for 7000-series Radeons:

Far Cry 3: Improves performance up to 4% with Anti-Aliasing enabled
Shogun II: Improves performance up to 20% with 8x Anti-Aliasing enabled
Tomb Raider: Improves performance up to 6%
Bioshock Infinite: Improves performance up to 6%
Borderlands 2: Improves performance up to 17%

the frame latency fix is in cat13.4 :s34:

I find it smoother and I can't determine any stuttering with my naked eyes on my 7950.

I went from Cat13.3 to Cat13.5 B2, did have Cat13.4WHQL installed briefly.....very briefly but did not test, and the performance difference is quite noticeable in Crysis 3. I played it @5760x1200, most Med and a couple of High ingame setting, 8xAF + Motion Blur at Med, just about playable at 25fps....surprisingly playable. Now, with Cat13.5 B2, I can play Crysis 3 at same res but with Very High setting + 16xAF + Motion Blur at Med. Framerate also up, from average 25fps to >40fps.......This driver prolly have CF profile dah, only way Crysis 3 performance can jump so much.....Very High @5760x1200, imagine that dah!

My friend excitedly spam my WhatsApp while I was sleeping when I told him about the new 13.4 drivers. His dual 7970 config now barely notice the stuttering in BF3 liao. :s13:
