Its look like 380X alone can beat R9 290X and probably even challenged the GTX 880.

well its because of lack of competition from AMD side that we are facing the $500+ for a price that is not even considered top end. GTX 880 at 256 bits. Seriously?


There is no need for speculation, the transition from 28nm to 20nm means double the amount of transistor can be packed in the same size.


Using the same architecture, R380X with its 4224 most likely will occupy a die size that is similar to HD 7970. I don't find that impossible as well.


Going by the specs, 380X or possible 390 (3840 SP if scaled accordingly from 290) is going to be very attractive in the same price range. Problem is are they going to really price it within the 300-400 usd bracket?

Obviously the specs aren't true. The R9 380X will be a recycled Hawaii and therefore it will have a 512-bit (or 256-bit) bus.

How u know Hawaii is recycled? If its recycled it has to be a 28nm card?


Hawaii wont be called Hawaii if they are based on 20nm despite using same GCN architecture.

How do u know they won't recycle or rebrand? Anyone can speculate at this moment until it's revealed.

Both nvidia and amd had been rebranding. I don't see how much diff the new series would be.

They always recycle some parts. Obviously they won't recycle their top GPU and it makes no sense to create a highend GPU with a 384-bit bus at this point. They either reuse last year's top part or cut this year's top part's bus in half. Pure speculation on my side but I don't think you will see a 384-bit bus on the 380X. Btw recycling doesn't exlude a die shrink. Intel has done it before more than once. Anyway, I doubt 20nm will be ready for high performance.

Already the name has been given out as Bermuda, fuji and treasure island. Yes everything is still subjected to speculation at this point, but Hawaii "might" be rebranded under a different name especially if there is a change on the manufacturing node. (280X has the same core name as 7970 because everything remained same, including node)

IF 380X has 3072 SPs, I dont see how 384 bits width is not possible considering it can be an entirely new core. To assume that AMD uses the previous flagship to be rebrand as 2nd tier card in next generation is wrong because this wasn't the case during HD 6000 -> HD 7000 transition. HD7870 wasn't using Cayman XT core (7870 XT was the nearest candidate to the core config but its based on Tahiti LE core). Also the GTX 880 did caught us by surprise with its 256 wide bit bus.

All in all though, I really hope the specs turn out to be true, because it will give more pressure for NV to price their card correctly. Prices of GPUs are quite ridiculous nowaday, as if they follow Moore Laws of doubling the amount every 18 months.

I'm sure there will be a top Maxwell GPU with a 256-bit memory bus but that won't be the GK110 successor most people are looking for. It will be a great part for notebooks and I think that's the main purpose for Maxwell right now. Even if the next top of the line GeForce might use that rumoured chip I doubt NVIDIA has big plans for it and we won't see it on a Tesla device. Maybe it's just the next step to separate both disciplines more from each other so the high end compute devices stay out of their gaming business.
