Actually, I rather AMD abandon CPU and GPU and just concentrate on embedded. Their custom SOC dept is actually making alot of money.
PC market is just too small and its dying. Mobile is growing very fast.
I feel that either way, AMD is still doomed unless they receive a cash injection via another mega company.
1) If AMD continues to fight on all fronts, it needs a huge cash injection for R&D research. Zen is a way to fight back Intel, and Greenlands GPU may stand a chance against Nvidia's Pascal. But the funds seemed to have been overstretched that only allows AMD to be on par with competition, can't be ahead of competition else the other sector will die. Even in SOC, it is currently facing competition from Nvidia's Tegra and Intel's Atom. Being stretched on all fronts without the freedom to maneuver due to budget constraints will eventually let AMD's competitors dominate in the various sectors that AMD's products are in.
2) Selling off their GPU and CPU sectors to big companies like Samsung (or Apple or Microsoft, if they are interested) may also backfire on AMD. These giant tech companies have the means and finances to buy over AMD's massive GPU and/or CPU sectors, but unfortunately these are also the big players in the market. Suppose AMD decides to sell to Samsung (the most likely scenario given Samsung's financial power), Samsung would then be further vertically integrated especially in the mobile division, deploying AMD's CPU technology in making the its own SOC chip more powerful and energy efficient. This may undercut AMD's move in the SOC market.
