AMD 7nm Zen 2 Speculation Hints At 16-Core AM4 CPUs And 15 Percent IPC Uplift

There is a core war taking place between AMD and Intel, with both companies designing CPUs with increasing numbers of physical cores and threads to throw at compute workloads. This is happening in the mainstream space as well, not just in the enthusiast and server sectors. AMD currently has the lead in that regard, and may aim to keep it with Zen 2, which is rumored to include 16-core CPU options.

Before we dive into the rumored Zen 2 details, let's talk a moment about the naming scheme. Zen is the name of the underlying architecture in AMD's Ryzen and Threadripper CPUs. In the mainstream market, there have been two generations of Ryzen so far—the original Ryzen launch based on 14nm Zen, and the more recent second generation Ryzen parts based on 12nm Zen+, which is a refinement of Zen. Zen 2 is what comes next.

7 nm is not going to be easy. Even Intel is still stuck at 14 nm.

I think they will definitely push in more pcie lanes this time round.

Cause they are smart to put 2 m.2 link into cpu pcie lanes rather than Intel using DMI by the PCH which is already saturated. AMD also saw that pcie nvme ssd getting faster and faster so no reasons for them to follow intel to link it to PCH.

So im guessing, if they are focusing on faster storage capabilities, they will include 3 m.2 slots, 2 of it will be able to handle full x4 pcie gen3 lanes, with probably the last one goes by x2 gen2. Or perhaps x2 gen3.

I think it is obvious Intel is in deep trouble. If AM4 socket can hit 16 cores at $500 or less that will be the biggest blow from AMD to their competitor we have ever seen.


Also up to 15% IPC is not only the big deal, the problem is the clock speed of 7nm which is boost by additional 20% clock speed. Now that is a combined 30-35% ST performance we are looking at.

Putting everything in, we are seeing 100% or more MT performance which will absolutely crash Intel in every aspect.

R7 3700X - 12 cores at $329
R7 3750X - 14 cores at $399
R7 3800X - 16 cores at $499

All clock at 4GHz at least and boost to 4.8 or even 5? That would be absolutely crazy.

Intel is always more expensive but people still buy
Maybe because it offers higher fps in games? Wanted to get 1700 but coffeelake came and I bought the 8400 instead since it offers higher fps in game.

I actually doubt AMD can increase core count and clockspeed drastically at the same time. No doubt it will be built on 7nm, it is not a miracle fab. AMD tend to go wide with their processor design than to go with high clockspeed. With an IPC improvement of 15% it will catch up with Intel easily. Intel took too long to release their 10nm which will put them in a very precarious position. If AMD beat them to the next die shrink, this will mark the first time Intel is at a disadvantage when it comes to fab.

AMD's CPU are more scalable likely due to Infinity Fabric. I also feel that Intel is reluctant to increase core count as it will increase their cost and cannibalise their higher end and higher margin processors.

At any rate, if AMD goes on like this Intel is highly likely to become the underdog of making CPUs instead of AMD. This just might tip the scales

Built my i5 6600 pc in 2016, looking to build again in 2020 and skip this gen if amd has their new socket ready. My cpu generation went obsolete rather quickly.

7nm is a double jump that skip 10nm directly, as said it does offer 20% faster transistor switching frequency.


Having more instruction per cycle doesnt mean the switching frequency and hence core clock cannot increase. IPC is usually more architecture dependent and we have that for the newer Zen 2 micro-arch. It is probably more difficult too do combined improvement but its not impossible.


AMD is still 20-30% fps slower in some games when it comes to low res. AMD also admit their IPC is up to 7.5% slower than Intel latest CPU, and that gap is widen by its 20% better clock margin. AMD Zen 2 need the combined clock speed improvement + IPC to finally overtake them once and for all.

And now add up to the core count. Intel is in trouble
