An article for those interested.

Key points.

AMD Fails Again. Keeping Things in Perspective.

AMD's Fiji-based Fury X benchmarks are out, and performance is disappointing.

Despite using expensive technologies like water cooling, and high-bandwidth memory, performance is overall slightly worse than NVIDIA's 980 TI.

AMD typically releases products before software support efficiently supports them, so it's likely we'll see performance improvements in later driver releases.

Although HBM did not cure AMD's performance deficiency, or lower power use significantly enough to give AMD an advantage there, it still uses significantly less real estate, and this allows form factors heretofore unavailable for cards even approaching these performance levels.

As of today, AMD's stock fell 6% after rising almost 20% in anticipation of Fury X.

A comment from the site that sums it up best. The card is good. Marketing problem though.

AMD's problem with Fiji isn't with the performance. They hyped up, what people believed to be a 980ti killer, and it is just on par/slightly below. Had they just stick with the relative truth instead of cherry picking settings for benchmarks, they would've had a success.

Here's the comparison

Performance - slightly below 980ti(basically a titan x)
Noise - nearly silent
Temp - very cool
Package - small

They didn't do bad. They just set the hype up too high and didn't deliver at that level. Not to mention being 6 months late to the party.

But the real question is would you pay $649 for the Fury X with 95% of the performance of a 980Ti but it is quieter, cooler, smaller and comes with a decent stock water cooling system? I would do it and a lot of people would too. The only problem now is that they received so much bad PR that it may sway some potential customers. Not good for a halo product that's supposed to sell the R9 300s as well.

They really need to fire their marketing team(does it even exist?) and get someone with some sense.

The card has on par performance with the 980 Ti

But is:
Smaller
Cooler
Uses some funky liquid cooled radiator thingy that gives bragging rights

I'd say that if I was in the market for a $649 USD card now, I'd get the Fury X over the 980 Ti. But yeah the hype was just...... it looked as if this card could beat the GTX 980 Ti by at least 5% before the NDA was lifted. :s22:

Seriously, I think their marketing department did a good job.
They got the attention they wanted and most tech review sites are generally positive.

It is more like a misleading thread title based on a Tom dick and Harry opinion.

If the marketing not supposed to create hype... Then they get hired for what? Gamlan uh?

I feel the marketing department's main role is to grab attention, and they did just that. If I recall, the marketing slides are also in direct comparison with their own R9 series. I think its just the fact that they keep emphasizing on HBM that started the hype.

If I am using a desktop, I think this will be in my purchase consideration for the below reasons,

1) Serious performance in a small package
2) Well built card
3) Stock water cooled (you don't have to pay separately and install)
4) Cheaper alternative to GTX 980 Ti.

Make no mistake I am also an Nvidia user, but I see potential in the Fury X. Drivers are still premature, so perhaps we can wait and see if it gets better over time. I am not expecting a miracle here, but drivers may make it slightly more competitive.

You garner attention but at least don't lie lar. The marketing bull so much of their numbers and created too much hype. they will only set to burn themselves in the end.

how much performance jump in % are we looking at?

Around 5x better performance in dx12? But not sure if it is enough to overtake nvidia's parts.

Dont think it's accurate just to compare like this...
Might be the case for all we know. Roflmao.
I mean honestly lah, if you releasing a new flagship gpu and the first thing you gonna assure the public that it is not gonna beat the GM200 or at the minimum, even be on level grounds then what reasons would the consumer be convinced to buy your gpu.

The only remaining logical thing to say is that it is the fastest right..

I'm not sure how accurate is that but I trust anandtech. You can read up the entire article here

The improvements seems to jump several fold, either because they are bad in dx11 or mantle really helps.

About the same performance and price but running quieter and cooler? If I am in the market now for a GPU upgrade, it would be the Fury X.

In any case, win-win for both AMD and Nvidia fans. If not for Fury X, will we be seeing USD649 980Tis?

Not saying that anandtech is an unreliable source. Rather, just by citing one example, we see up to 400% increment can be yielded then we assume that dx12 is 5 times as efficient is a little jumping the gun don't you think.

Perhaps as you have suggested, the game works really well in dx12 maybe a considerable factor.

I thought if it isn't for 980Ti we wouldn't see 649usd fury X...?

Fury X was originally priced at 849usd iirc but due to 980Ti they decided to price it down.
