Wow! I guess the battle between ARM and x86 is heating up. AMD's rival is not longer just Intel and vice versa.

Ampere currently has 80 core Altra CPU @ 3.3GHz. Its 250W so its not a low power CPU. No idea how is the performance right now though. But if its close to AMD and Intel, I think it will be a real competitor.

Like that only still talk simi battle heating up. Shows how many people in here know almost nothing outside of their x86 and Windows toys. Foxconn released an ARM server board years back that had two Cavium ThunderX 48-core SoCs with 4-way SMT on it for a total of 96 cores and 384 threads and nobody gave a toot.

What makes you think anybody will give a crap about this 128core ARM SoC?


ARM also doesn't have a standard platform like the generic PC platform where one generic OS install image with a generic kernel and bootloader can boot off all x64 hardware variants. Linux, which has the best known ARM compatibility today, has so many patched kernel variants specifically meant to bootstrap only one specific ARM SoC out of the thousands available today. Red Hat doesn't even bother trying for compatibility and simply mandates SBSA-enabled ARM platforms only. Windows 10 on ARM has the worst compatibility of the lot, where it won't even boot on any ARM hardware other than a select few Qualcomm and Broadcom SoCs.

Until ARM gains a significant market share, it would not be considered a meaningful competitor to AMD and Intel to the general consumer. Maybe Apple's switch to ARM processor might help with this to some extend but unlikely.

The ARM platform has always been a competitor in different spaces. The most common on is the mobile and IoT industry. Where power consumption and heat management is of criticality, RISC based processors seems to offer these advantages.

ARM has also extend into cloud computing. AWS offers ARM based instances since 2018. The recent instance types are based on ARM Neoverse N1 architecture.

Definitely we are looking competition among the brand’s, but I will regard them as different use cases having the advantages between ARM and Intel/AMD are of different focuses. One group is on efficiency/power consumption advantage, the other is more on exploiting as much performance as possible as power can offers without melting the processor.

Of course, should ARM also plays into performance space, then it may be a different story. Time will tell, and we will see if the industry have enough appetite for more competitors as the pie is split further
