Can recommend how to start learning Android app development ? Would like to try out writing simple programs for my phone.

If you did some java programming. Then you shouldn’t be facing too much problem in android studio, cause android studio uses a lot of java command.

Thanks... can I ask roughly how many hours I need to go through (average intelligence) before I could deploy a simply app on a Android phone with simple menu and display screen ? Roughly.. 1, 2 days ?

If you have prior knowledge, I reckon 3 days is the max.
