OK. Sushi meals for my trip just went out the window

If it is sliced, you should be able to see... but if you buy whole fish (most of the cases are due to housewives buying whole fish), then have to be extra careful

There are cases quite a bit missed even in Japan.

Sliced as a piece & it may still hide inside nicely.
5mm x 0.5 cm can see ?
5 mm x 1 cm may be missed?

Larvae of the white, string-like parasite are about 5 mm wide and up to 3 cm long.

They are often found in species like mackerel, Japanese horse mackerel, salmon, saury, sardines and squid.

Experts also say that people with severe pain should go see a doctor and have the parasite removed using endoscopes.

No mention where he took it but assumed to be in reasonable restaurant .

Japanese comedian Tomoharu Shoji, revealed on the Fuji TV program “Tokudane” on Wednesday that he contracted the parasite last summer.

Would it be safe to consume at sushi restaurant in that case?

Japan isn't just about Sushi or Sashimi, so much other nice food. So if you're in Japan now and worried, do not dispair, there's a world of other nice food there.

Definitely true.
I almost never eat any raw food while in Japan even though my family loves sushi / sashimi.

Nothing to do with hygiene.
Like raw oysters here & the luck is in the supply source & careful screening of the raw
food before serving.
The tiny larvae may not be visible in naked eyes.

I think good restaurants with high hygienic standard should be fine.
