Anti-virus/adware/malware software for Macs

Hey guys, from what I was told, it's quite close to impossible to tio virus into our Macs. But is this a myth or a fact? Also, are Macs vulnerable to adware and malware attacks? I've found a MacKeeper app installed with its PUP files and other adware system files. Traced and deleted it using Malwarebytes.

Thinking of purchasing their premium version. But...is it really a must?
