I remember the following cases of culture shock I experienced:
1. Smell of cow dung
The moment I stepped out of New Delhi airport
Cow dung everywhere ... The smell is everywhere.
Kinda reminds me of old Singapore kampung in a nostalgic way.
2. Human Dung
It is a " minefield" at railway stations.
So don't wear your expensive Nikes....
3. Water
Do not ever drink the tap water there.
Go for bottled water even when brushing your teeth.
Avoid iced drinks, street food, cut fruits coz they use the same water which will cause Diarrhoea.
Half of my Singapore tour group and including the Singapore tour guide / leader kena " Lao Sai "
4. Women
I'm a guy but I would be concerned about those rape cases if there were women traveling with me.
5. Beggars
Do not give any $$$.
No matter how compassionate you are.
Once you donate to one beggar, the rest will literally swarm all over you.
Ermmm, like the walking dead tv series!!!
6. Safety
A local guide is always recommended.
They have unsafe areas just like any other country.
7. Natural exhibitionists
Only in India will you find naked beggars ( men women and children ) coz they are really poor.
There are naked people walking around too but for religious reasons.
8. Traffic
The traffic there is really chaotic.
Men, women and children clinging onto the top of buses, lorries and trains like a bunch of monkeys !!!!
They cross the roads like they own it!
Cross the roads at your own peril.
The roads are very bumpy for passengers.
9. Haggling
When you buy stuff, always haggle.
You can go for 1/10 of the original price offered.
Don't mean to sound negative but I thoroughly enjoyed my trip to India with my family.
1. Spirituality vs commercialism
Indians ( except for the rapists) are very religious and I really respect them.
Most other modern societies have embraced $$$ as their main religion.
2. Culture
A trip to Varanasi or the Taj Mahal is an absolute must!
