what made u choose those locations?
Just want to be away from everybody else and the overly familiar areas - Sukhumvit (Asoke, Nana etc), Pathumwan etc where its crowded with people. I stayed at Sathorn previously near the Saphan Taksin pier and liked the area for having more Thai residents and easy access to the river taxi and Chinatown from its southern end. I enjoy the river taxi very much and will use it as much as I can again this time.

Ratchada near Sutthisan MRT because it is quieter than the previous station Huai Kwang and its happening neighbourhood. Nearer to Don Muang too, and Chatuchak if I want to visit again.

thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Chinatown easier via mrt nowadays. but since u enjoy river taxi, will definitely be more convenient. stayed once, never use river taxi even once, usually quite crowded with tourists.

too quiet for me. not too fond of night markets or chatuchak.

I like Ratchada area too. Hotels seem cheaper. Which hotels do you recommend in that area??

Not sure if I want to visit Chinatown at all, though I like Sampeng Lane. Maybe I'll visit Hualumphong Station for the memories and also see if the canal taxi is operating from there.
I'm not very fond of night markets, but I will visit the hyped ones this time.

I picked the Baan Tanwa this time. It's nearer to Ratchadaphisek than Sutthisan station.

My 2cents views on the hotels I stayed in:

House of Phraya Jasaen
Hostel which has rooms with 4 bunk-beds but external toilet. In-house laundry and cafe. Building has timber rafters and high ceilings. Suitable for family with kids.
Great location at 7 minutes' walk to Sathorn Pier (ferries, including those to Asiatique and Iconsiam) and Saphan Taksin BTS. One can walk to the Shangri-la, the Robinson mall and Lebua Tower
A little noisy as the road in front is active even at 5am. 7-11 next door, a small supermarket opposite. If possible, go for rooms at the rear of the building. Cleanliness is good.

Baan Tanwa
Family-run hotel which is in an apartment block and the compound houses other establishments like an open pub screening sports programmes, a ground floor swimming pool and the owner's living spaces. Some of the space houses a recording studio. Laundry. Seems popular with long-term tenants.
Good location at 7 minutes' walk to Ratchadaphisek MRT, though the walk in the narrow soi can be quite unnerving. Very accessible via this Blue Line to night markets, Chatuchak, DMK, malls in the adjacent stations. Quite a direct drive to Dreamworld, which we visited.
7-11, Lotus Go Fresh within 3 min walk. Hawker stalls and Mookata joint next door.
Some issues with maintenance are surfacing, so I won't be back after 2 years unless a renovation is done.

River Kwai Bridge Resort at Kanchanaburi, if anyone wants, I can comment too.
