Using a lenovo y510p...

The hardware is pretty good, with SLI 750mX2 and i7 4700 cpu.

however, the harddrive is only 5400rpm and i am experiencing very slow loadtimes and bootup timings, very irritating every time boot up take liks 10mins to settle everything down.

Will changing to a SSD help alot? how much can those bootup and loading times minimize by?

BIG PROBLEM

Adding an ssd is very expensive right? i saw on Amazon its about $380 sgd for a 500gb one...

My laptop supposedly got a NGFF connector but lenovo didnt add it in to save money...but the slot if there. Is it possible to get a shop to add the connector in? if NGFF the cards seem to be alot cheaper than changing the whole ssd and i even get to retain my old harddrive...

I am using a Lenovo z400 now as well, I have called Lenovo regarding this issue about upgrading to an SSD before... They warned me saying that the motherboard may not detect all kinds of SSD(idk true ornot... should be lying?) and if you spoil anything during the upgrade process, warranty is voided.

the removal of my HDD from my laptop is difficult,There is a very high chance of me damaging something :s13: or at least... scratching the sides so I dare not try and just be patient, I not sure about yours...

This is the disassembly of my laptop, i know it is a z500, but it is the same as the z400 just that there is the numpad and bigger screen

Nah, y510p's hard drive can be easily acessed and removed without much trouble. I got my y410p at like 10pm and got my ssd in there by 11pm. All it took was a quick clone and swap.

I did some research on the net on y510p before buying it but in the end i settled with another laptop.

Y510p comes with ngff slot and you can get mydigital ngff ssd from amazon and apperently mydigital is the only brand that sell ngff ssd. The maximum size is 128gb for now.

For installation guide, you can google it. You can find the guide on amazon review on mydigital ngff too.

I think the HDD got error. You could check it first using these tools :

HD Tune website

Go to Health and see are there any lines has yellow or red colors. Go to Error Scan to begin scanning but don't choose Quick scan. It was to find out does it has bad sector or not.

Check again with this :

Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring

Look to the Perfomance and Health. It has leave how many percent.

If it has bad sector and Perfomance and Health got worse you could request replace for new HDD.
