Any tele/macro shooters here?

Do you shoot landscape on tele and do you plan such shots?

I’m planning a shot that is about 1.3km away over a width of maybe 5-8 houses.

I’m not exactly sure what is the focal length needed but that will be fixed focal length lens I’m using

I’m going to use iPhone that have a 48mp sensor that can prop up to x2 (58mm) or a smaller sensor up to x5 (120mm).

ideally I want to have a longer zoom on the main sensor and it is for evening / night shot. I’m thinking of getting a macro that gives 10x

it just makes me wonder why people dun just use macro as a tele? Do they? Sorry for dumb question as I’m not familiar with this two.

Macro allows a close up shot of the subject, can be 1:1 life size or even higher magnifications. Usually for macro lenses the minimum focusing distance to subject can get much closer than usual lenses.

It is good for close up shots.

In the case of macro attachments for handphones, I bet it can only focus at very close range e.g ants , insects.., it cannot focus on far away subjects.

Telephoto means using lenses with longer focal lengths. Can shoot subjects that are further away.

Macro relates mainly to the lens function, telephoto refers to the focal length. You can have a telephoto lens that can shoot macro if provided it can shoot life size 1:1 reproduction ( although there are some lenses that can only do 1:2 reproduction and still get labelled macro ) However a macro is not necessary and usually not a telephoto lens.


Regarding ur subject being 1.3km away, you are looking for a telephoto option, not macro.

Saw another review on sandmarc macro 100mm and it has a maximal focusing distance hence not suitable

I’m now deciding between beastgrip 1.7x Tele which will give 40-80mm versus moment 58mm which will give up to 130mm supposedly on iphone main lens and x3 tele

anyway I recheck on the google map. The shot I want to get a group of Onsen with smoke coming out so I look for onsen on google map and the two furthest are 350m from each other and each of them 600-650m from my vantage (1.3km is walking distance) which gives about 30 degrees angle of view and that translates to 75-85 mm focal length

which means I have to use the 2x teleconverter on the x3 tele on iphone unless I can find a 3-5x teleconvertor that is good on the main lens

too bad I chose iPhone 15 pro instead of pro max if not the x5 tele will be useful in this rare occasion

And I might separately look for close up filter to reduce minimal focusing distance

maybe good for taking pictures of food

Just to continue discussion on the macro lenses. you were saying for handphones using macro attachments, you need to focus at very close ranges. Does that apply to full frame cameras as well?

I was doing some checks on the internet, i found that Sony has a 50mm f2.8 lens that has macro. Do you still need to focus very near to the object?

There is also an option Laowa 100mm 2:1 magnification ultra macro lens. Does that mean you can shoot and have macro images without focusing as near compared to the 50mm sony lens?

If DSLR/mirrorless user buys macro attachments to "convert" non macro lens to allow closer focusing then yes cannot focus to infinity, can only focus near.

( think magnifying lens, long sighted reading glasses )

Sony FE 50mm f2.8 macro is my fav lens actually, on my A7r >90% of the time Focusing distance is nearer than non macro 50mm lenses, and also focus to infinity.

Minimum focusing distance :
Sony 50mm f 2.8 macro - 20cm
( achieves 1:1 life size magnification )
Sony 50mm f1.8 - 45cm
( cannot achieve 1:1 magnification)

There is also an option Laowa 100mm 2:1 magnification ultra macro lens. Does that mean you can shoot and have macro images without focusing as near compared to the 50mm sony lens?

Laowa 100mm 2:1 macro - 24.7cm
( achieves 2:1 double life size magnification e.g a 1cm object can be captured at 2cm image on sensor uncropped )

If you want to shoot at 1:1 life size you probably dun need to go so close, so yes you do not have to go as near as 50mm Sony macro lens.

Frankly the Laowa macro specs look impressive. But also bear in mind it is manual focusing lens, at 2x magnification u need high shutter speed, higher iso, good stabilisation, better external lighting etc.
