Depends.
In the Army (including the rest of SAF; and also SPF and SCDF), if you do something stupid and it breaks one of the more serious rules (e.g. fighting, punching an Officer, insubordination, AWOL, etc), then you’re liable to face Court Martial charges and do some serious time in DB (Detention Barracks).
DB is no picnic.
They’ll make you get up before the sun rises and run you around the parade square until they are satisfied that you’ve sweated out buckets of sweat, then immediately send you back to your cell. Now, you’re thirsty, right?
Well guess what, the only clean potable water is coming straight from your squat toilet. You guessed it, you’re gonna be so damn thirsty that you’ll have no choice but to drink that delicious fresh toilet water. It’s no surprise that the inmates keep that toilet sparkly clean.
But your day isn’t done yet.
There’s area cleaning in other parts of DB, inspections, and if time allows, some workshop courses, meals (where you’re not allowed to waste food, and terrible punishments are meted out if you waste food) and propaganda indoctrination to make you understand why what you did was terrible.
Additionally, there is also Sandbag Physical Training (Sandbag PT), where you’re made to do all sorts of heavy lifting workouts, in the hot scorching sun, with a sandbag. Basically, in case the rigorous discipline doesn’t work, they make further a cursory effort to reform you.
Some good does come out of DB though… I’ve seen recently released ex-detainees of DB… They look rock hard and their ripped abs put Hugh Jackass to shame. But— their psychological makeup turns up a little cowed and subjugated, due to the concentration camp-like treatment.
I’m not sure what happens when you serve time in civilian jail, and then get conscripted into the Army, but you can be damn sure you don’t get a command posting.
