hi GetaBlue,

you can try www.statravel.com.sg

they have student prices for tickets and iirc additional allowance for baggage weight.

they were at IDP's Australian Education Fair.

I researched before for a friend and there are about 1-2 other sites that offers student tickets. however in the end we took up SQ's return tickets (max stay 1year), and requested for extra baggage allowance by submitting acceptance offer letter online. the return date could be changed w/o penalty at times. but that is if u think u probably will come back home once a year. :)

hey those who study B.IT in UQ, anyone took up MULTIMEDIA as major?
im interested in that but i do not have any basic skills for this at all even though ive gotten 1year exemption due to poly dip. and im thinking will i able to learn from start in there??

Rather, any one who in B.IT recommend which courses to choose ? will going for no major better than a single major? http://www.uq.edu.au/study/program_list.html?action=view_all&acad_prog=2230&year=2009

Choosing courses

Hi shalome,

I will also be pursuing an IT degree, and I hope this may help you in one way or another.

On the topic of your major, perhaps an approach you could consider would be to shortlist the jobs you will be applying for after graduation.

For example, would you want to work as a:

Network Engineer(Networking and data-communications, wireless or otherwise)
Application Developer(Software engineering, programming languages)
Systems Analyst(Software Information Systems, maybe?)
System Administrator(Operating systems, networking)
Database Developer

There are interest groups on HWZ forums with more information on each IT specialization and the various certifications to pursue for the respective area. The IDA website has a pretty good career guide to get you started, and information on the funding schemes available for skill upgrading is also available there.

On the topic of multimedia, you will need to consider that IT(Multimedia) will equip you for the technical aspects of the field, such as interaction design and programming. If you are looking into areas more relevant to what you see on the media, you may be better off considering a visual communication/design program instead.

As an example, if you were to look at the website for zouk, the graphic artist could be in charge of producing images for the site, whereas the multimedia developer would be writing logic for the effects you see on screen, such as the rolling menu and how the menu responds to your mouse movements.

Hi shoot2ill,
thank you very much for your insights. appreciate. it gaves me a better idea too, and i really gonna make a wise choice.
may i know how many years are you going to do there?
and any idea what modules you intend to study? or with majors?
:)

i dont have much IT skills, so one thing im scared is that i going to Uni for a B.IT as a whole new being like that. So i wonder what can i really cope and at least able to get a decent job. i heard InfoSys is tough and good. actually i go for B.IT mainly also that its the only thing that i have some interest of. I have always interested in Multimedia, and more to arts, but my studying options and choices were restricted by my family. Now I couldnt really study Law and Music for degree, so i can only go into IT. Though i studied Business also but i have not much interest.
Probably the concern is that i am taking up a large sum of money therefore i would like to find ways to secure myself a bit. :)

Hey, I'm also going, and looking for off-campus accomodations. Please contact me if you want to share.

Also, for flights, I got mine over there at around 280 bucks, budget airlines. First to Darwin then to Brisbane, overnight. Now, think the offer went up to around 400 plus or so. Check out Jetstar.

ok my residential college juz informed me that they r not going to give me a place... im quite peeved cos i applied way back when the registration opened last year and i listed them as 1st choice... den i was supposed to put 2 other choices as well n none of em was kept in e loop of my application n dun bother to reply to my queries...

i think this is really poor organization n dissemination of information to all parties... very disappointed... in any case the uni oso stated u cud only send e application form to 1 college and in hindsight i shud've juz applied individually to all of em to even stand a fighting chance... oh well lesson learnt n juz thought to share wif u guys...

well, all I can say is that in the 3 years i've been here, most aust unis and colleges have been very inefficient in terms of administration.

I was from a Multimedia course in Poly, and the only classmates I had who are currently doing anything mildly related to it are now a photgrapher, and a videographer. Incidentally, only one module throughout our entire course applies to what they are doing now, and it isn't even completely related. If you are more of an arts person, you will truly be better off out of IT. Think of a structure more similar to NP(FSV) or NYP(DMD) instead of IT.

From my internship at a multimedia company, arty people seem tormented by the computer's inability to realise their artistic vision, and an MM developer is simply there to translate human vision to computer language. Compared to LaSalle/Nafa/DMD grads who do a lot more design and receive grounding in fine arts, my 2 modules worth of 3d studio max seem trivial at most.

Friends who went into programming and system engineering seem to be doing well though, but I'm considering networking/security as a reliable major to go into for a reasonably stable income. QUT seems to be stronger in the area, but I generally have the impression that it will matter more only for post-grad and research students. Their module selection seems wider and more specific as well, and hopefully applying for credit transfer between UQ and QUT will be possible for some of them.

Oh, and I'm doing 1.5 years by the way. Think I lack background in data structures and algorithms or something, or they simply didn't bother to look up my transcripts much, so they just gave me 1.5 years.

I am a BIT(Hons) grad almost 2 yrs back. Spent 2.5 yrs for under grad and 1 yr Hons. I had no prior IT background as well. It's not hard and you get to choose your combination of a wide range of courses which I must say its pretty interesting.
