most singaporeans can pass the IELTs exams without having to study for it... IELTs tests basic conversational skills, rudimentary grammar and vocabulary usage.....I would compare it to O level english or easier.

the hard part would actually be the written exams.....1 hour for a composition and letter....us singaporeans usually run out of time because we have too much to write

I took the IELTS(academic) last year. IELTS is definitely very easy for singaporeans to pass but to ace it would be another question.

simply Os is not a standardize standard across the world, whereas TOFEL and IELTS are.

i'm applying for an overseas degree.
hope that helps.

please do not digress away from topic.

thanks!

i wished i could do that. but anyway to prove my point once and for all,

here's the link.

and in fact alot of countries would require TOFEL/IELTS. just do some research if you'll be interested.

think we've gone off topic and i will close thread here.

you will need it to apply for PR even though Singapore as an English speaking country

I do not mean to "digress" away from the thread, but this is my personal experience.

When the outcome of my UCAS application was out, my - current - school listed several criterias before I could be matriculated. One of the criteria was that I need to sit for TOEFL or IELTS. So I emailed the admissions administrator, asking her if I could be excused from taking that test. I reasoned with her that Singapore is an English-speaking country and that I got a B3 for English at "O" Levels (I'm a polytechnic graduate). It was a long shot, but suprisingly, she allowed it. :D

So what is the moral of the story? Well, if any school asks you to sit for an English test, ask them if you can be excused from taking that test. You won't know until you ask.

Is the TS applying for degree or PR? If he/she is applying for a degree, then no, IELTS is not needed. If you are applying for PR, yes you need IELTS but bare in mind the result only last for 2 years, that means you must apply for PR within 2 years, if not you have to retake it again
