Was looking at original screens for Samsung and iPhone on Tiktok Shop, Taobao and saw some ridiculously cheap price like $8-$15 a piece

Is it too good to be true?

Outside repair minimum $100+ for Samsung

The parts aren't that expensive depending on the grade.
It's the labour that is expensive everywhere, even in China itself from experience.
Moreover, for Apple there's a need to verify the parts so that it's recognised as an authorised repair otherwise, error prompt will surface and when you sell, it's gonna be an issue.

Sometime back, ordered for my old redmi note 3, and for my thinkpad x200 (both from Taobao). I can't remember the exact prices, but both were very inexpensive. Just had to accept the hassle and DIY "learning experience".

check what the grade of the screens are. the cheap ones may be lower grade.

"expensive" is relative to each location ;)
changed the main/internal folding screen and the 2 batteries (labour and parts) on a 4year old oppo find n2 flip, in Huaqiang (Shenzhen). total damages was around sgd200. the main cost component, as you pointed out, was in the labour.

Yup, changed mine at SZ - HQB too which i felt it was expensive due to labour.
Parts were aplenty and cheap but labour as always is the killer.
Unless one DIY that will eliminate the labour cost, but how much is one's time worth then?

agree on the labour being a high proportion, but in the end, still much cheaper than in sg, done right in front of me, turn around time 1 hour. So, to me, it's a win, vs DIY

it's not just the time, but the learning curve. The labour charge is not for time, but their expertise to do a good job quickly. Vs my fumbling aound. It was a good learning experience though, changed 2 screens, and a couple of batteries. Just had to be aware of the lack of water&dust resistance.

i'm lazy now, so it's cheaper to pay someone a reasonable fee. More time to go on holiday.

Yes, back then when it was much easier to DIY, I do it myself, nowadays very much prefer to pay for their expertise like you said.
Though it's satisfying to DIY successfully myself!

Did once before for my old HTC phone.
Parts are cheap, it is the labour as mentioned by others.

Any tips on how to verify the grade?

All the adverts just spam “我才是原配“

Can only base off reviews, hard to determine since like you said everyone's going to state theirs is original/the best.
Been a while since I last purchase for DIY.
